Around this time of year, in person gatherings tend to increase. Whether it's for a company retreat or office holiday party, we often focus first on the tangible logistics for preparing for said gathering - venue, food, drinks etc. How much time do we spend on considering the purpose, the "why", the reason for gathering? Anywhere from wanting to express appreciation after a challenging year, to getting aligned on strategy for the year to come, purpose is one of the building blocks we find crucial for gathering well. In our conversations with leaders all over the world, we often hear about the challenges of leading in a matrix, leading cross functional teams and influencing others' decisions. One of the common denominators in all of these challenges is the ability to influence or lead when you do not necessarily have positional authority or power. As we each grow in our roles as leaders, moving from managing a direct team to leading others requires some additional skills. In response to these ever-present challenges, in January we are going to be gathering with a group of leaders to discuss these challenges and the skills we think are critical. Check out Roger Henderson & Robin Anselmi talking about the critical skills of leading without authority: Listening to Learn, Emotional Agility, and Purpose Driven Conversations and Feedback. It's not uncommonly felt that the only way to have influence is through position power. But regardless of title, each of us have the ability to be a leader in the spheres we occupy. One of our guiding principles we repeatedly come back to is purpose-driven leadership. In this blog co-authored by Robin Anselmi and Roger Henderson, the program leaders for The Purposeful Leader, they share more about what it means and looks like to lead without authority. 📚 Read the full piece here: https://lnkd.in/gzgfWGq8 #thepurposefulleader #purpose #purposefulleadership #leadwithoutauthority #leadership #collaboration

In NPR's recent Short Wave podcast episode, hosted by Regina G. Barber, an interview with Dr. Arash Javanbakht, a psychiatrist from Wayne State University in Michigan, dissects the science behind our primal bioreactions like fear, and why some of us enjoy (and actually benefit from) the experience of scary movies. "Part of your brain is terrified by the possible danger, even while our more recently evolved frontal lobes may know we're safe. You may feel more alive having fear in a controlled environment. Acute fears may also give you perspective on everyday fears that are not life threatening." - Barber So, if there's an upcoming conversation that's already making your palms sweat or heart pound, maybe the best practice run for getting more acquainted with these bioreactions is popping in a scary movie! There is great natural intelligence in our survival instincts, but in modern society we aren't faced with the same physical threats as we were in the primitive eras. This may sound really obvious, but what's less obvious is how these instincts can still at times influence our mental and emotional states in everyday life and conversations. "The first and most important step is getting curious about our personal patterns and tendencies when we’re in these emotionally activating situations." We can all probably think of a moment when we said something we wish we hadn't. We may look back on some of those moments and think how out of character it was, trying to wrap our brains around how it reached that point. This is a common human experience, and one that provides a wealth of growth opportunities if we choose. Coming up soon is a fun read on a not-so-fun subject, by Emma Rose Connolly! #bioreaction #awareness #relationships

Due to our deeply rooted survival instincts our brains often magnify threat. This applies in situations that are actually life threatening, as well as perceived threats in social settings. So, whether you're reacting to a mountain lion on your path or your boss saying "we need to talk" the visceral responses that happen in an instant are often the same. Patrick Kennedy breaks down these four common bioreactions, how to work with them in the moment, and how to recover more quickly. https://lnkd.in/gTrnMj6J #bioreaction #presence #fear #awareness #recovery
