"In its holiday projections, the National Retail Federation expects sales for the months of November and December to rise 2.5% to 3.5% to between $979.5 billion and $98 billion. During the season, the average spending per person for holiday gifts, food and decorations is expected to hit $902, up $25 from last year, the National Retail Federation said." (via LNP | LancasterOnline) Now that the holiday shopping season is officially upon us, the question is...where will you be shopping? While rising consumer demand is good for the nation – consumer spending accounts for ~70% of the U.S. GDP, after all – the local economy is most impacted when purchases are made at the shops, pop-up markets, and retailers that are owned/operated by (and employ) local residents. In fact, an economic impact study conducted by American Express – creator of the annual #SmallBusinessSaturday campaign – found that an average two-thirds of every dollar spent with a local business stays in the local community! As you prepare to dive in to this year's holiday shopping list, simply spending some of that gift-giving budget with local retailers, craftspeople, and service providers that are located here in Lancaster County is likely to have a significant impact on not only these business' bottom lines, but on the local economy as a whole, too. #EDCLancaster #LancasterPA #LocalEconomy #LocalBusinessCommunity #ConsumerSpending #HolidayShopping

Yesterday, an executive order signed by Office of Governor Josh Shapiro formally introduced the new #PAPermitFastTrack Program, which aims to increase transparency around as well as streamline the permitting process for high-impact economic development and infrastructure projects in PA. "The goal is to help developers better understand and navigate the state permitting process, which can pose obstacles to development. “Businesses need timing and scheduling certainty when making multimillion-dollar investments to upgrade their operations,” EDC Lancaster County vice president John Biemiller said in a statement. “Any effort to acknowledge and reduce the often-lengthy permitting window for business investment projects is a welcome step in the right direction.” (via biznewsPA) #EDCLancaster #BusinessRetentionandExpansion #LancasterPA

#EDCMember spotlight: The Steinman Foundation As a long-standing EDC supporter and current Visionary-level Member, The Steinman Foundation has long been dedicate to improving the quality of life in Lancaster County by focusing on programs benefitting Early Childhood Education & Development; Economic & Workforce Development; and Local Journalism and Media Literacy. Recently, the Foundation had the chance to touch on all three focus areas thanks to the Lancaster County STEM Alliance's annual Educator Externship program. Over the course of two days, seven local educators paired up with Lancaster Farming & Susquehanna Printing staff for an immersive experience learning about the local ag industry and, ultimately, reporting on their experiences out in the field. When we say that engagement with local businesses is at the heart of all that we do at EDC Lancaster County, we mean it. Case in point: the quartet of events that members of EDC & EDC Finance Corporation attended – all on Thursday night! From the inaugural Celebrating Excellence in Business Fall Dinner & Chamber Awards hosted by the Northern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and Columbia Economic Development Corporation's inaugural Small Business Summit to the 32nd Annual Celebration hosted by Finanta (formerly Community First Fund) and a holiday happy hour hosted by Decades Lancaster (and with Wednesday's ribbon cutting at Denim Coffee's new downtown Lancaster location thrown in for good measure), our team could be found across the County supporting the businesses, organizations, and individuals that help our local business community thrive. #EDCLancaster #EDCFinance #LancasterCountyPA

#EDCMember spotlight: CNH Industrial / New Holland Agriculture Did you know that New Holland, PA, is known across the globe as an epicenter for innovative agricultural manufacturing? After establishing in 1895 as a two-man machinery repair shop called the New Holland Machinery Company, New Holland Agriculture emerged as a hay foraging pioneer in 1940 with the introduction of the first commercially-viable automatic self-tie baler. In the decades since, parent company CNH has maintained the hometown plant – a sprawling 340-acre campus which includes a 700,000 sq ft manufacturing facility and a 150-acre test farm – as both New Holland Agriculture's North American headquarters and a Global Center of Excellence for its industry-leading Hay & Forage operations. Today, the New Holland plant employs ~600 workers; produces 30 different models of balers, forage harvesters, and other haytools; exports to 45 countries around the world; and continues to break new ground for farmers across the globe. *** EDC's 2025 Membership campaign is officially underway!
