Week 19 Reflection Activity: Quick Impact Challenge Name: Idara-obong Iko ID: FE/23/58756631 Cohort: 2 Learning Track: Data Analysis and Visualization . In my Quick Impact Challenge, I participated in a call center activity designed to support and uplift peers who are also training with my ALC. The aim was to address any challenges or concerns they are experiencing and foster a sense of community and motivation. During the calls, through active listening: I listened carefully to their issues and made an effort to understand their viewpoints. I took detailed notes on a GOOGLE SHEET, which helped me point out common problems and areas where more support was necessary. For those who seemed particularly discouraged, I offered personal words of encouragement and reminded them about the upcoming training sessions, highlighting the benefits of getting involved. IMPACT ASSESSMENT: Notably, some trainees shared that the personal call was the boost they needed to participate in the next session. Additionally, the feedback collected provided valuable insights for improvement. Dr. Appolinaire Tiam, Vice-President of Elizabeth Glaser Pediatric AIDS Foundation and Professorial Lecturer with the Department of Epidemiology, published study results in the BMC Health Services Research Journal titled “Understanding health systems challenges in providing Advanced HIV Disease (AHD) care in a hub and spoke model: a qualitative analysis to improve AHD care program in Malawi”. Thirty-two interviews were conducted with healthcare workers and lay cadres, and more than half of them reported the Advanced HIV Disease training sufficiently prepared them to handle patients. Still, weaknesses in supply availability and patient referral systems were challenging. With the hub-and-spoke model to combat these challenges, Advanced HIV Disease care can increase for patients.

🌟 New Publication Alert! 🌟 We are excited to announce our study, "Assessment of Facility Readiness for Pediatric Emergency and Critical Care Utilizing a 2-Phase Survey Conducted in Six Hospitals in Uganda and Cameroon," has been published in Pediatric Emergency Care! This quality improvement study utilized the Sepsis CoLab's Environmental Scan survey to identify target areas for quality improvement related to pediatric emergency and critical care in six sub-Saharan African hospitals. Key findings include: ◉ Varying levels of facility readiness to provide pediatric emergency care. ◉ Only 1 of 6 facilities had qualified staff to assess children for danger signs upon arrival. ◉ Only 21% of essential medicines required for pediatric emergency and critical care were available. ◉ Most facilities faced electricity interruptions impacting care delivery. These findings underscore the need for targeted improvements in pediatric emergency and critical care. The facility-readiness tool can assist hospital administrators and policymakers in enhancing care quality for critically ill children. As France’s most common rare disease, SCD disproportionately impacts communities of African, Caribbean, and Mediterranean descent. Patients face significant challenges, from frequent hospitalizations to systemic inequalities in healthcare access. This event marked an important step forward: ✅ Launching a legislative proposal to tackle SCD-related disparities. ✅ Deepening the understanding of SCD’s impact through the voices of patients and experts. ✅ Building momentum for solutions like updated protocols and improved public awareness. We are excited to share that Dr. Alice Umutoni, MD, a Global Surgery and Research Fellow at Operation Smile, has written insightful commentary on the recent passage of the Safety of Rwanda (Asylum and Immigration) Act 2024 by the UK Parliament, published in The New Times (Rwanda). This legislation, allowing the deportation of certain migrants from the UK to Rwanda, has sparked significant global discussion. Alice emphasizes the need for robust healthcare systems to support incoming refugees, advocating for increased resources, infrastructure, and the integration of refugee healthcare workers. She highlights that collaboration between the Rwandan Government, UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, and partners is crucial for ensuring quality care. Despite Rwanda's history and partnerships, more efforts are needed to expand healthcare capacity and overcome cultural and language barriers. At Operation Smile, we are dedicated to bridging the gap in access to essential surgeries and healthcare, creating brighter futures for our patients and their communities worldwide. 🌍 5 Years of Impact: Ethiopian Primary Healthcare Clinical Guidelines 🇪🇹 Exciting insights from a new publication on the Ethiopian Primary Healthcare Clinical Guidelines (EPHCG) program! Over the past five years, the EPHCG has successfully scaled up to 92% of primary care health centres in Ethiopia, showcasing the effective implementation of the Practical Approach to Care Kit (PACK) strategy. Key highlights include:- 1.Strong Leadership: The Federal Ministry of Health's (FMoH) leadership and support were crucial. 2. Initial resistance from health workers was mitigated through community awareness campaigns. 3.Challenges: Resource allocation, procurement of medicines, and training fidelity were notable challenges. Earlier today at 4 am EST, I led a 3-hour long interactive training session on "𝘛𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘯𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘦𝘴, 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘵𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦𝘴, 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘎𝘭𝘰𝘣𝘢𝘭 𝘚𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴" with the amazing participants of the cohort 2 digital health training by The VC HealthTech Hub. It was indeed a mutual learning experience all around, as I had the opportunity to learn alongside the participants who shared their lived experiences with using digital health technologies in their various work ranging from clinical practice to pharmaceutical supply chain management, including the use of drone technologies for the delivery of medical supplies in remote settings. Here are some highlights from the session: 𝐃𝐢𝐠𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐥 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬: Here I explored some digital health technologies in practice and shared some case studies such as the adaptation of an OpenMRS software in Kenya to design an electronic health management system (i.e., AfyaEHMS) including implementation challenges encountered. During the interactive session, one of the participants shared his experience as a clinician making informed data-driven clinical decisions using data from a patient's continuous glucose monitoring log, which ushered us into the conversation on health data interoperability. 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐚𝐫𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲: The conversation highlighted the need for interoperable and standards-based systems while discussing two specific types of standards: semantic and syntactic standards. The interoperability conversation was wrapped up with a focus on barriers to interoperability in Africa from literature. 𝐆𝐥𝐨𝐛𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐬 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧: We moved on to chat about global goods, their open-source attribute, and their standards-based design to support interoperability. We explored two widely implemented global goods applications, OpenMRS and DHIS2, using the global goods maturity model for assessment. Then, I shared use cases of some global goods applications with the participants, and we wrapped up the session with framework components for assessing digital health technologies, including some metrics for impact measurement.
