Why the US is the top country for tourism in 2024 The Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 ranks countries around the world based on factors like safety and security, prioritisation of travel and tourism, air and ground travel infrastructure, natural and cultural resources and sustainability. This year's rankings saw Spain, Japan (last year's winner), France and Australia ranked in the top five, and a newcomer at the top of the list: the United States, which outperformed the global competition with its scores for its business environment, air transport infrastructure and natural resources. The high scores are a reflection of the country's robust infrastructure, ease of travel between cities, diverse natural and cultural destinations and traveller-friendly resources – such as guides to cities, parks and other attractions. "While obvious reasons for this accolade exist, such as its diverse landscapes, natural beauty and cultural richness, the US also boasts a well-developed infrastructure supporting the travel and tourism sector," says Anna Abelson, an adjunct instructor at New York University's SPS Tisch Center of Hospitality. TTG Media, a leading publication in the travel and tourism industry, has just published an article spotlighting why easyJet and other travel leaders are increasingly focused on Montenegro. In the article, Montenegro is presented as a destination that attracts visitors with its unique charm, blending stunning landscapes, rich history, and culture. The author of this article noted that it is hard to believe that this Balkan country, with its UNESCO-listed Bay of Kotor, has not been widely visited by British tourists. “Now, however, Montenegro and its attractions are easily accessible thanks to tour operators like easyJet holidays, which offers package deals and direct flights from London, Manchester, and Bristol from May to October". For this article, the director of The National Tourism Organisation of Montenegro, PhD Ana Tripkovic Markovic, spoke on the growing interest of British tourists in Montenegro as a destination, evidenced by a steady increase in visitor numbers. She also emphasized the importance of green initiatives to preserve Kotor's unique character and to advance sustainable tourism practices. Is Armenia’s Tourism Really Thriving? Key Insights from the Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 In Armenia, we often celebrate rising tourist statistics and increasing visitor numbers. But are these figures telling the full story? The recently published Travel & Tourism Development Index 2024 by the World Economic Forum, in collaboration with the University of Surrey, suggests that all is not so well. The index provides a comprehensive overview of the global Travel & Tourism (T&T) sector’s post-pandemic recovery and ongoing challenges. The TTDI, composed of five dimensions, 17 pillars, and 102 indicators, draws from international statistical data and the World Economic Forum’s Executive Opinion Survey. It aims to inform policymakers, companies, and stakeholders by identifying strengths and areas for improvement within T&T economies. While global T&T is projected to return to pre-pandemic levels by the end of 2024, the recovery remains uneven across different regions and segments. Armenia, in particular, faces notable challenges. The country ranks 72nd in the index, lagging behind neighboring Azerbaijan (56th) and Georgia (45th), with Iran just behind at 73rd. Disturbingly, Armenia has seen the most significant decline in its ranking among neighboring countries, dropping 8 places since 2019. In contrast, Turkey improved by 8 positions, Georgia and Iran each rose by 4, and Azerbaijan fell by 5. Moreover, Armenia scores 6% below the TTDI average. The index highlights several key areas where Armenia falls short compared to the Eurasia average, including Business Environment, Safety and Security, Openness to T&T, Price Competitiveness, Infrastructure, Natural and Cultural Resources, and T&T Socioeconomic Impact. Despite these challenges, there is a path forward for Armenia. To fully harness the potential of its T&T sector, Armenia needs a comprehensive, data-driven, and evidence-based strategic overhaul. In that regard, there is a need for a detailed strategic framework that outlines target countries and a comprehensive action plan, including the impact assessment and the financial model. This transformation should focus on: - Strategically managing visitor behavior and infrastructure development; - Putting local communities at the center of T&T development; - Increasing travel openness; - Investing in a skilled, inclusive, and resilient workforce; - Adopting technology for sustainable and resilient T&T management; - Bridging the digital divide and creating opportunities; - Enhancing nature conservation efforts; - Leading on the energy transition. https://lnkd.in/ekFuhNEP #Tourism #Armenia #TTDI2024
