Excellent panel discussion launching the RE Energy Systems module of REN21 's #GSR2024. The discussion was one of the most intriguing debates I listened to in a while. All speakers pointing at spot-on needs for #systemintegration #sectorcoupling #overarchingplanning #stakeholderengagement at point zero of the planning! My only addition would be that this overarching energy system planning should go hand-in-hand with multi-sector #landuse planning. What we witness on the ground, when we work with national stakeholders is that the lack of multi-sector planning for both the overall energy system and land-use makes life harder to also engage the right stakeholders early in the process. That is because it leaves a lot of room for subjectivity on the things that are needed to tackle #climatechange while empowering people and nature. I can't say enough about the urgent need for a systems thinking if we actually want to have 100% Renewables. And for that, indeed a new narrative is needed for a strong and flexible energy system. Looking only at the rate of renewables deployment and generation, though they should increase A LOT, can still be misleading if they end up causing curtailments and low/negative pricess. The official tracking report of the two UAE Consensus energy goals, launched during Pre-COP in Baku today, highlights that annual investment in renewable capacity would have to triple, from a new record high of USD 570 billion in 2023 to USD 1.5 trillion every year between 2024 and 2030 to meet the global goal of tripling renewable energy.
