March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month! Colon cancer is the 2nd deadliest cancer in the United States following lung cancer, and about 153,020 Americans were diagnosed just last year. That is why this month FuGENE would like to remind you to get screened for colon cancer if you are over the age of 45. Getting a colonoscopy is still the best way to screen for colon cancer. However, there are now other options such as the Cologuard that allows people to screen for colon cancer at home. METASTATIC CANCER Metastatic cancer refers to cancer that has spread beyond the point of origin to other distant areas of the body. Metastasis is a word used to describe the spread of cancer. Unlike normal cells, cancer cells have the ability to grow outside of the place in your body where. they originated. When this happens, it's called metastatic cancer, advanced cancer or Stage IV cancer. The most common sites for cancers to metastasize include the lungs, liver, bones and brain. Other places include the adrenal gland, lymph nodes, skin and other organs. Some people will have minimal or no symptoms of metastatic cancer. In most cases, metastatic cancer is not curable. About 90% of ovarian cancer cases are epithelial cancers, which commonly begin in the fallopian tube. Overall, ovarian cancer ranks as the fifth most common cause of cancer-related death among women in the United States. In 2020, an estimated 207,252 people worldwide died from ovarian cancer. None of the results were related to lung cancer. How is it possible that when literally typing the word 'lung,' there are no videos representing the #1 cause of cancer death globally? Today is World Lung Cancer Day, a time to raise awareness and support those affected by lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. At Freenome, we are developing blood tests to detect lung cancer early, when it is most treatable. With AHW Seed Grant Funding, researchers at Medical College of Wisconsin are exploring improvements to lung cancer treatment that isn't responding well to current immunotherapy. 🔬 The research team is studying specific proteins (EZH1/EZH2) that may help the immune system better recognize and fight small-cell lung cancer—one of the most aggressive types of lung cancer. 🧬 ⚡ Why it matters: This type of lung cancer affects more than 1 in 10 lung cancer patients, and survival rates are very low.
