We're grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the Girls Agency Research Symposium. AMPLIFY GIRLS’ work around building an adolescent girls agency survey is fundamental as we work towards enhancing girls empowerment programs. 🔍 Research shows how barriers to women’s agency limit their capacity to advocate for investments in themselves, resulting in fewer years of education, more limited labor force participation, and earlier marriages than their male counterparts. Providing girls access to life skills training enhances their abilities to make choices to invest in their human capital accumulation. 📚Our recent Life Skills Toolkit consolidates evidence from 16 randomized evaluations to discuss how life skills training can boost adolescent girls’ agency. At the Girls Agency Research Symposium, we were joined by content and technical experts whose contributions were invaluable to the refinement of the Adolescent Girls Agency Survey. Listen to Dr. Aubryn Allyn Sidle, Ph.D. from GAL Consulting, Dr. Matt Thomas, Joyce Malombe, and Priya Nair as they share their takeaways from the process. Empowering Women: Breaking Barriers in Education and Entrepreneurship 👩🏫👩🍳👩🔬👩✈️👩⚕️Imagine and visualize a world where every girl has the opportunity to pursue their ambition, where women are equally represented in leadership positions, and where innovation prospers without limitations. This is the world we strive to create. In Nigeria, women face significant barriers in Education and Entrepreneurship. According to a report by World Bank, only 9% of women in Nigeria have completed secondary education, compared to 22% of men. This disparity has a ripple effect, limiting women's opportunities for economic empowerment and leadership. But, there is hope, by investing in women's Education and Entrepreneurship, we can unlock their potential and propel progress for all. Statistically, • Women make up only 30% of entrepreneurs in Nigeria. • Women-owned businesses in Nigeria are 34% less likely to obtain a loan than male-owned businesses. One solution to this is: Mentorship Program; which plays a pivotal role in empowering women. By connecting aspiring female entrepreneurs with experienced mentors, we can provide them with the guidance, support, and network they need to succeed. Together, we can create a world where every woman has the opportunity to reach her full potential. The African Union International Center for Girls & Women's Education in Africa is spotlighting the pivotal role of female innovators in reshaping Africa’s educational landscape through technology. These women are creating pathways for entire communities to follow. And if you know me, you know this is the type of stuff that truly fires me up inside. In Kenya, a groundbreaking initiative led by local female tech leaders uses AI to tailor educational content to the needs of rural students, enhancing learning experiences and academic success. This project is set to expand across East Africa and promises to bridge significant educational divides in marginalized communities. Similarly, in Nigeria and Ghana, mobile apps developed by women deliver educational materials in local languages, breaking barriers and fostering inclusivity in learning environments. The African Union's recognition of these women puts the transformative impact of their work on marginalized communities, particularly for young girls, into the spotlight. These initiatives encourage continued innovation and support in STEM, empowering more women to lead and innovate. The more we can champion these women, the better. Together, we can support and amplify their efforts, making every community a place of opportunity and growth. #womenempowerment #opportunities #africa

On this International Day of Women Judges, we consider not only the importance of promoting #WomenInJustice and #WomenForJustice but also the benefits for local, national, and international communities of educating girls more broadly. In our project context of Tanzania, access to secondary education for girls is not only challenging but also dangerous. Part 2 (my key takeaways from the 6th Gender Is My Agenda Campaign - GIMAC Network Strategic Engagement) 🤓: - There’s need to improve income generating opportunities for families thus addressing the issue of children dropping out of schools, and further addressing domestic violence- there’s a clear correlation between gender income gaps in household economy and intimate partner violence. Education's essential role in promoting economic independence for African women and girls cannot be overstated. - To foster economic independence for African women and girls, we must address challenges in access and funding while focusing on strategies to link education to opportunities through advocacy and policy reforms for sustainable development. - We must be intentional in investing in gender-responsive institutions, implementation of legislations, policies, protocols and frameworks and having these monitored. This enhances responsiveness and accountability- who are our duty bearers? - Reiteration on the need for African governments to allocate substantial amount of their national/annual budgets towards inclusive education. The stipulated 20% allocation is not being done consistently across the continent. - While this year’s African Union theme, "Educate an African fit for the 21st Century: Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, lifelong, quality, and relevant learning in Africa" is timely and relevant, it needs to be fostered and embedded beyond 2024 and throughout the coming years; it needs to be lifelong. - Last but not least, our beloved motherland 🇰🇪 was heavily cited during the conference: that the case of Kenya’s GenZs needs to be applied across all countries- calling out leaders and keeping them accountable in all facets of life, governance and economy ✊! So much more that can’t fit here but great to have been part of these critical conversations even as we seek to mainstream gender in education and advocate for gender-responsive education policies and practices in Africa. Congratulations to everyone who put this together, you did a great job. Definitely looking forward to the next one 🙌! #YearOfEducation #GenderEquality #QualityEducationForAll VVOB in Kenya VVOB in South Africa Everlyne Nyongesa Martin Njeru Louisa Kadzo

Happy International Women's Day to you all! This year's theme is 'Tipping Points' and we firmly believe that access to education is one that has an enormous impact throughout the world on women's ability to be independent and engage in their communities. Literacy and numeracy skills are vital for breaking cycles of poverty, food insecurity and gender marginalisation. Almost 7% more men in Kenya are literate than women and closing this education gap is key to providing the foundation for women to embrace opportunities.
