Exciting developments in renewable energy! The Moroccan Agency for Sustainable Energy (MASEN), backed by the European Investment Bank, is set to launch Africa's first offshore wind project off Essaouira’s coast. With an initial capacity of 30-40 MW and plans to boost Morocco's renewable generation by 6 GW by 2030, this initiative positions Morocco as a potential electricity exporter to Europe. While challenges remain—such as high construction costs and unique geographic factors—the pilot project marks a significant step forward for sustainable energy in Africa. Curious about the implications for Morocco and the broader African landscape? 📰 Unlocking the #renewables potential in #Africa to achieve the global #3xRenewables target and increase universal energy access is highlighted in the IPS News article on #IRENA14A “Electricity remains the backbone of Africa’s new energy systems, powered increasingly by renewables, but a large part of the continent is still left out of the energy transition,” said Bruce Douglas, CEO of GRA. Africa has the potential to achieve several renewable energy milestones, with the latest estimates showing that the continent accounts for around 39% of the world’s renewable energy potential. Some of the policy recommendations discussed at #IRENA14A include countries revising their regulatory framework and moving towards harmonisation to improve regional and cross-border electricity interconnections. Additionally, speakers called for an increase in investment in the continent, as part of the effort to reduce the existing gap between the Global North and the Global South. “Private and public investment is critical to tackling the multiple dimensions of today’s energy crisis in Africa but to ensure energy security, diversification of various sources is also essential,” added Bruce Douglas. Namibian minister calls for urgent investment in Africa’s energy sector https://lnkd.in/esnYCHP7 At the 2024 Africa Energy Week, #Namibia’s Minister of Mines and Energy, Tom Alweendo, stressed Africa’s untapped energy potential. With abundant green hydrogen, solar, and wind resources, Africa could transform global energy markets. Yet, barriers like poor policy frameworks and infrastructure gaps hinder progress. Despite holding vast natural resources, 75% of #Africa’s population still lacks reliable electricity, and less than 2% of global renewable energy investments flow into the region. Want to know how Africa can overcome these hurdles? Read more https://lnkd.in/esnYCHP7 Tom Alweendo Africa Energy Week International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA)
