🔥 The heat is on in Finland in the end of the year when it comes to investment news. There are many large investment cases moving forward, to name a few: 💡 Green North Energy announced that Meridiam, a French infrastructure investor, has joined its undertaking to build a 280-megawatt green ammonia production plant in Naantali, Southwest Finland. 💡 A partnership of leading industrial, energy, and climate technology-focused companies will commence a feasibility study regarding a low-carbon aluminium manufacturing facility in Kokkola and Kronoby, West Finland. The initiative is financed by Rio Tinto, Mitsubishi Corporation, Fortum, Vargas, and Tesi. 💡 Norsk e-Fuel has secured a greenfield site in Imatra, Southeast Finland, as part of its strategic project pipeline. The site has sufficient space to build an 80,000-ton e-Fuel plant and potential for further expansion. 💡 Google is planning to expand its cloud and data centre infrastructure in the country after receiving permission to acquire four parcels of land, covering altogether some 1 400 hectares, in Kajaani and Muhos, Northern Finland. Should the US follow the Chinese example to ensure success in the green technology sector? “A new study by the Kiel Institute indicates that Beijing heavily subsidizes its domestic industries, particularly in sectors such as green technologies like electric mobility or wind power. Estimates suggest that China's overall subsidies range between three to nine times that of other OECD countries such as the USA or Germany. According to the analysis of new data, one of the major beneficiaries is the electric car manufacturer BYD.” Kiel Institute for the World Economy #greentechnology #climatechange #nationalinvestment #investment #economicimpact #subsidies #industry #alternativeenergy

𝗣𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗹𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗦𝘄𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗻! ⚡ Finland and Sweden are striving for net-zero emissions by 2035 and 2045, respectively. With 87-96% of their electricity already CO2-neutral, the focus is now on full electrification and decarbonization across industries, transport, and heating. These goals are ambitious - achieving them requires €178 billion in investments for Finland and €243 billion for Sweden by 2040. However, the existing market design faces hurdles like price volatility, infrastructure delays, and investment uncertainty on both the demand and supply side. Without addressing these risks, electrification on this scale is likely to fail. Investments need to be long-term commercially and financially viable across the entire value chain! How can we create a stable, attractive environment for green investments that accelerates electrification? We suggest a mix of improved market design and targeted mechanisms - including capacity remuneration mechanisms, publicly-backed power purchase agreements, and stable regulatory frameworks. With these tools, Finland and Sweden can unlock the full potential of electrification, creating over 120,000 high-value jobs across the two countries, lead Europe’s energy transition, and set a global example for achieving net-zero goals. Read our report for Fortum here: https://lnkd.in/d-tsNBGG
Electrification in Finland and Sweden presents significant economic and employment opportunities, supporting high-productivity jobs and boosting industrial competitiveness. However, investors face barriers and need long-term frameworks to support these investments. Fortum commissioned Copenhagen Economics to analyse the economic potentials of electrification investments in Finland and Sweden towards 2040 and assess optimal market designs. In our delayed electrification scenario, EUR 122 billion investments are expected in Finland from 2025 to 2040. In a decarbonised economy, electrification has the potential to generate EUR 56 billion more in investments in Finland towards 2040, totalling EUR 178 billion. For Sweden, electrification can generate EUR 200-300 billion in investments by 2040, depending on the scenario. We recommend several instruments to enable electrification investments in Finland and Sweden. To discuss our findings, contact CE experts Signe Rølmer Vejgaard or Morten May Hansen. The Nordics in 2025: Strong and united Next year, Finland and Åland will jointly lead the work of the Nordic Council of Ministers. The programme of their co-presidency was presented at the Session of the Nordic Council in Reykjavik this week, emphasising that the three strategic priorities of a green, competitive, and socially sustainable Nordic region continue to be the most important guidelines for Nordic cooperation. A key building block in this course of action is energy, as highlighted in the presidency programme: 🔐 Energy security of the Nordic countries is an important factor for economic stability and social welfare. Our common goal is to ensure a reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy supply. 🤝 Cooperation in the areas of innovation and sustainable solutions will strengthen the Nordic region’s position as an attractive investment object for a resource-efficient transition to clean energy. 👩💻 New technology in the field of energy is needed alongside increased production to cater for growing demand and to facilitate the transition to clean energy. ⚡ Secure energy infrastructure is of the utmost importance in ensuring the reliable and uninterrupted supply of energy, protecting critical societal functions, and preventing various threats and interruptions. 💡 Ensuring sufficient electricity production capacity even in crisis situations is crucial. A low-emission and sustainable energy future requires technical innovations and cooperation. Furthermore, energy continues to be an important part of the Nordic Council of Ministers’ political priorities 2025–2030. The new sectoral cooperation programme on energy was just released, guiding the inter-governmental work in the next five years. Nordisk Energiforskning strongly recognises this priority, and we are involved in many activities promoting cooperation on energy-based solutions for a green transition. We will target our work on these priorities through our recently adopted strategy towards 2030.
