Antiracism work has always been important work, so I will not use clichés like ‘Today’ or ‘Now more than ever.’ The fact remains that when you look around Europe, we are confronted with the mainstreaming of hate. Islamophobia, antisemitism, anti-Black racism, antigypsyism, anti-Asian hate, and anti-Latino hate are prevalent in ways that we could not have imagined 5 years ago. The gruesome murder of George Floyd was meant to be a watershed moment where, as a society, we collectively committed to combating hate and racism in all its forms and wherever it reared its ugly head. However, we are faced with the opposite. Those who preach hate now disguise their vitriol in anti-migrant discourse, liberal Islamophobia, and cultural preservation rhetoric. We cannot be deceived. Europe is a dangerous place for racialized and minoritised people. This is why we must engage our elected officials and civil society actors to ensure that Antiracism work is prioritized, funded, and supported. Our lives literally depend on this. The struggle is real, the battle is uphill, but we persevere because we must! Please, join our efforts. Disseminate this as widely as possible and engage your loved ones, friends, and colleagues. Together, let us rid society of racism! Can’t appreciate enough my colleagues Julie Pascoët and Nourhene M. who have been leading European Network Against Racism Aisbl (ENAR)’s efforts to reestablish the Antiracism and Diversity Intergroup (ARDI) at the European Parliament.
Today, we are joined by Platform for Undocumented Migrants (PICUM), ILGA-Europe, Equinox: Racial Justice Initiative & 30+ organisations 📢 in urging MEPs and their political groups to ensure #ARDI continues its vital work advancing racial justice in the European Parliament. 📩 Read our joint statement: https://lnkd.in/eGmg5jBg European Roma Grassroots Organisations (ERGO) Network EAPN - European Anti Poverty Network Feminist Collective of Romani Gender Experts New Women Connectors #antiracism #racialjustice #EU

https://lnkd.in/dX8xhaUz “This moment of triumph in South Africa starkly contrasts the grim reality faced by the LGBTIQ+ community in other parts of the continent. For instance, Uganda passed a draconian law that criminalize same-sex relationships and impose severe penalties on those found guilty of homosexual acts. These laws, often used as political tools to galvanize support from conservative constituents, are a gross violation of human rights and have been widely condemned by international human rights organizations. In Uganda, the passage of such laws is frequently accompanied by a dangerous rhetoric that dehumanizes LGBTIQ+ individuals and incites violence against them. MPs in Uganda have been accused of queerbaiting—manipulating anti-LGBTIQ+ sentiment to gain votes and political favor. This cynical exploitation of fear and prejudice stands in stark contrast to the progressive strides being made

It seems so ironic that we are celebrating Human Rights Day today. So much poverty and still such unabating inequality. Fellow South Africans trying to live on R350 to feed families for a month and gender based violence continuing to prevail. As South Africans we all need to do so much more to make this a country - that genuinely is a Mecca for human rights - not a cardboard cutout of something called a 'Rainbow Nation'. It starts with getting to know one another, getting to understand where we are similar and how we are different, and understanding how to bridge those gaps so that we can meet one another as equals and understand the injustices in the lives of so many of our compatriots. Then we must work together to improve the situation. #Humanrightsday #SouthAfrica #democracy #DEIB #Humanrights2024

#HumanRightsDay2024 SA celebrates 30 years of its democratic project. This is an achievement worthy of celebrating as we acknowledge sacrifices made by many luminary leaders who lead the country out of its #Egypt experience. We also salute the many unsung heroes and heroines in the country and the diaspora who made enormous contributions bequeathing us this #democracy. We celebrate the many progressive laws that assert full suffrage association to all South Africans. It is uncontested that South Africa has lead in many critical areas in #policydevelopment especially in relation to affirm a #humanrights culture that ensure #rights for all. We are today a proud non-sexist and non-racial society that seeks to treat all its inhabitants with dignity and respect. But we also note that whilst we have registered significant advances, we are still confronted by serious challenges. We have the highest #unemployment rate especially among the youth. #Crime levels are high, #corruption levels are unparalleled and #poverty levels remain high. For us at Sonke, we remain concerned by high levels of #GBVF, #rape, and #sexualharassment. These #contactcrimes are above global averages for a country that is not at war. We are all enjoined both by our constitutional values, the dream and vision of our forebears to redouble our efforts to ensure that SA is free of all forms of #violence, #discrimination and all forms of phobes pervading our national life. We owe this to our ancestors, our children and future generations.

🧡 Helping protect the rights of Palestinian women in East Jerusalem and the West Bank🧡 HaMoked: Center for the Defence of the Individual (Hebrew: המוקד) is an Israeli organization dedicated to protecting the rights of Palestinians affected by the Israeli occupation. Among their key areas of focus is addressing the impacts of occupation and residency restrictions on the rights of Palestinian women in East Jerusalem and the West Bank. Residency restrictions disproportionately affect women, making them vulnerable to domestic violence and limiting their ability to seek help. Women from the West Bank who depend on their East Jerusalemite husbands for temporary residency often find themselves trapped in abusive situations, fearing the impact on their residency status, livelihood, children, and social rights. As part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, HaMoked is shedding light on these critical issues. It works towards an end to occupation and a future where no woman has to choose between her safety and her rights. Learn more about HaMoked’s work and how you can support their work for justice and equality. #16Days #EndViolence #HumanRights #GenderEquality Note: Due to the sensitivity of HaMoked’s work, no photos will be shared, only its official logo.
