Peninsula's ‘Levante LNG’ Positions Algeciras as a Hub for Maritime Decarbonisation. This article, published by Enagás on 22 November, highlights the transformative impact of the Levante LNG project in advancing sustainable maritime transport and reducing emissions in southern Spain and Strait of Gibraltar. The Levante LNG bunker vessel began operations in September 2023, sourcing LNG from Enagas regasification plants, primarily in Huelva. With a capacity of 12,500m³, it has become the most active LNG supply vessel in southern Spain and Strait of Gibraltar this year and is the only one of its kind operating in Andalucia. It is 50% owned, chartered and commercially operated under exclusivity by Peninsula, a global leader in sustainable bunkering solutions. The Levante LNG project is a result of an initiative from the Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Algeciras - Port of Algeciras to improve air quality in the port and its surrounding areas, it was driven by Enagás through its subsidiary Scale Gas and Peninsula. The project included the construction and operation of the Levante LNG, a liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering vessel, and is co-funded by the European Union's Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) programme. Avenir starts bio-LNG supply to Destination Gotland Avenir LNG conducted the first bio-LNG delivery to Destination Gotland. The environmental-friendly fuel was delivered by Avenir’s bunker vessel “Avenir Aspiration” in the Port of Visby, Sweden. The ISCC-certified product was produced in Europe and loaded into Avenir’s bunker and transport vessel at the Port of Zeebrugge, Belgium. The replacement of fossil fuels with bio-LNG allows for a significant reduction of emissions resulting from the operations of the ferries. Marcus Risberg, CEO of Destination Gotland, was satisfied that the companies expanded their cooperation to make ferry operations on the Swedish East coast even more sustainable: “We are committed to provide comfortable and reliable transport services for our customers between the Swedish mainland and Gotland. The possibility to use bio-LNG ensures that we can provide our services in an even more sustainable way, thereby reducing the impact on the environment and population.” For the sourcing of the bio-LNG, Avenir cooperates with different biofuel traders with access to physical and mass-balanced bio-LNG at various European terminals and can provide tailor-made products and supply chains for its marine and industrial clients in Europe. Jonathan Quinn, Managing Director of Avenir LNG, commented: “As a leading supplier of small-scale LNG and owner of one of the largest global LNG bunker vessel fleets, we strive continuously to provide safe, reliable and efficient fuels whilst minimizing the environmental impact for our customers. Setting up new bio-LNG supply chains is at the core of our global growth strategy.” In 2022, Destination Gotland and Avenir signed a multi-year contract for the supply of LNG to the dual-fuel RoPax ferries “MS Gotland” and “MS Visby”. Since then, Avenir conducts up to 20 ship-to-ship LNG bunker operations per month in the Swedish ports Visby and Nynashamn. #lngbunkering #lngasmarinefuel #lbg #sustainableshipping

Can Brazil’s ambitious emissions goals drive a sustainable aviation future? Topsoe and Refinaria de Petróleo Riograndense SA have joined forces to make it happen. Leveraging Topsoe’s HydroFlex and H2bridge technologies, the Rio Grande plant aims to produce 16,000 barrels per day of renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from soybean oil and tallow feedstocks. By 2028, the plant’s full operation is projected to avoid over 2 million tonnes of CO2e annually, positioning Brazil as a leader in green aviation. Topsoe’s Chief Commercial Officer, Elena Scaltritti, emphasized the critical role of SAF in achieving Brazil’s newly set airline emissions targets. Will this partnership set a new benchmark for sustainable fuel production in Latin America? Share your thoughts below! This week on Bunkerspot, we spoke with Peruvian bunker players to discuss the inauguration of COSCO SHIPPING Ports Chancay Perú (Puerto de Chancay), and how it could potentially boost #marinefuel demand in the region. Speaking to Managing Editor Ian Taylor, Luis Goldenberg, the Managing Director of Callao-headquartered bunker supplier famoil energy ltd, said that his company is planning to dedicate one of its 4,000 tonne capacity barges to serving the bunkering needs of the #vessels that will be calling the new facility. As reported previously by Bunkerspot, Oslo-based Ro-Ro company Höegh Autoliners has already taken delivery of the first two in a series of 12 #ammonia-ready Aurora Class PCTCs. We caught up with the company’s CEO, Andreas Enger, who underscored his belief that the fuel will play a key role in the #decarbonisation of the deep-sea #shipping sector. ‘It’s quite obvious that green #methanol is going to be a far more costly fuel than ammonia and methanol is far less scalable than ammonia, so for us and everybody that can use ammonia safely and environmentally #sustainably, we believe there are really no other competitors,’ Enger said. For its part, #Hong Kong-headquartered Pacific Basin Shipping Limited said it ‘remains confident’ that green methanol is ‘currently the most appropriate low #carbon marine fuel’ for its first generation of low emission vessels but added that it will ‘continue to reassess the benefits of different fuels’ The company announced it has ordered four 64,000 DWT dual-fuel Ultramaxes capable of running on both green methanol as well as #fueloil, scheduled to be delivered in 2028 and 2029. In other news, U.S. Congresswoman Nanette Barragán has introduced a bill that aims to support the development and deployment of clean shipping #technology for zero-emission vessels; MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company and energy company Eni have signed an MoU to work together on decarbonisation initiatives, which may include the ‘potential use’ of #LNG, bioLNG and #HVO as fuel for the MSC fleet and facilities; and #Malaysia’sPortPort of Tanjung Pelepas has refuelled A.P. Moller - Maersk’s dual-fuel vessel Antonia Maersk, marking the port’s first ever ship-to-#containership methanol bunkering operation.
