I keep hearing reports of a shortage of scientists, yet I there are so many graduates, post graduates and post docs who have left their chosen fields. Either they fell off the post doc merry-go-round, failed to publish or found research incompatible with a family. Skilled, intelligent, adaptable researchers should have better opportunities to retrain in other fields. This would diversify their skills base from their niche areas. Positions are too niche and inflexible, with employers only willing to pick someone from the ether that fits their ideal skills set. With overseas candidates being turned away by the UK's hostile approach to immigration employers may have to turn to disillusioned ex-researchers. I would love to return to science in some capacity but there is little opportunity to. Maybe there is less of a shortage then people think. Maybe employment practices have to change and be more relevant to modern life. You get more opportunities doing an apprenticeship than a doctorate these days.

Darcey Gillie is Careers Consultant for Research Staff at The University of Edinburgh. Dr Gillie recently interviewed two University of Edinburgh research alumni who recruit staff and asked them to share their insights and advice for making a career change from academia to industry. Even if researchers find themselves in a different field or aiming for a different sector, this advice can still be a useful starting point. The blogpost also includes links to relevant support from the university's Institute for Academic Development Careers Team. "Don’t be afraid to apply for an industry position you don’t think you’re 100% qualified for – no one will ever be 100% qualified for a position, and some of the requirements on job specifications are “nice to haves” not “must haves” for the employer. A challenge faced by early career researchers is the pursuit of postdoctoral opportunities. Despite completing doctoral studies in September 2022, I have struggled to secure a suitable postdoc position despite applying extensively. But i couldn't... Through my applications, I've noticed concerning trends: Firstly, there's an emphasis on quantity over quality in publication records. The expectation for researchers to have numerous publications during their PhD and to continue this trend in the future is unrealistic. The time-consuming nature of research, including topic finalization, coursework, experimentation, data analysis, and the lengthy peer-review process, makes it difficult for fresh PhD graduates to produce a high volume of quality publications. Secondly, obtaining sponsorship or work permits poses a significant hurdle. Many positions require candidates to have these permits, leading to the exclusion of qualified researchers simply due to administrative constraints. I believe recruiters should reconsider these criteria to provide opportunities for early career researchers. Otherwise, discouragement may lead to two undesirable outcomes: some may abandon their research pursuits altogether, while others may prioritize quantity over quality to remain competitive. These observations reflect my personal perspective, and I acknowledge that others may have differing viewpoints. I am still hoping for Best and trying for Best.

Find out more about Dr O'Brien's inspiring story; from being a teenage carer to completing a PhD in Social and Public Health at the University of Glasgow, to building a successful career in academia, followed by freelance research and analysis for the Civil Service, University-NHS partnerships, and the Third Sector, using her life experiences to include the perspectives of marginalised groups. “So far, I have completed a total of fourteen studies as a freelancer, which have mostly involved leading on the development of qualitative analysis and writing final reports on findings. Projects usually have quick turnaround, which I find enormously satisfying after a working on studies that took years to complete. I enjoy the variety of working across a range of different projects, disciplines, and contexts, and with the many teams involved.
