(Un)happy Equal Pay Day UK! It’s time to down tools ladies (of only it were that easy). Equal Pay Day is the day of the year when women stop earning relative to men due to the gender pay gap. Sadly, frustratingly, unacceptably, the date this year is two days earlier than last year when it fell on 22nd November. This means that, despite years of slow progress to close the UK's mean Gender Pay Gap, it has definitively widened for the first time since 2013. Information is taken from The Fawcett Society who have made this super short and helpful infographic. Gender pay gap for full time employees is 11.3% (can I adjust my tax bill accordingly?????). https://lnkd.in/eAjuUwmA There are many factors that contribute to the pay gap including pay discrimination, women’s unequal share of caring responsibilities, and a failure to promote women in the workplace. I believe we need both a bottom up and a top down approach in organisations paired with policy change. Bottom up - empowering women to believe their own worth and ask for the recognition they deserve which just so happens to be where my coaching programmes are focused (tap me up for more info and take things into your own hands)… We can take concerted action to shift things ‘at the top’ but we also need to take charge of our own lives through education, peer to peer support, male allyship (yay - more on that later with my good friend Tarquin Bennett-Coles 😉) and an unshakeable belief that we deserve better. Despite decades of advocacy, the gender wage gap remains deeply entrenched, rooted in occupational segregation, devaluation of women’s work, and systemic discrimination. Equal Pay Day symbolizes the ongoing wage gap between men and women, where women need 14.5 months to earn what men do in 12. Despite efforts, in 2024, women earn only 84 cents for every dollar earned by men. The National Women’s Law Center reveals staggering lifetime earnings disparities: $399,600 less for women starting out, and even larger gaps for women of color. Educational attainment doesn’t shield against this disparity. Occupational segregation, devaluation of women’s work, and discrimination perpetuate the gap. NOW advocates for #PayTransparency and legislative actions like the Salary Transparency Act and the Paycheck Fairness Act to combat this inequality. #EqualPayDay #GenderWageGap #EqualPayForEqualWork #WageEquality

Today is Equal Pay Day. It marks the day in the year when, based on the gender pay gap, women in the UK stop being paid compared to men. The Fawcett Society has confirmed that this year it is two days earlier than last year. Despite gradual progress over the last few years, the gender pay gap has widened for the first time since 2013. Fawcett uses the mean, full-time, hourly gender pay gap for the UK to calculate the gender pay gap for Equal Pay Day. This year it is 11.3%, up from 10.7% last year. In 2024, how can the gender pay gap be increasing? Every business has a responsibility to ensure that workers of all genders receive equal pay for work of equal value and to eliminate pay discrimination. Yesterday was Equal Pay Day in the UK - coming two days earlier than last year ❤️🩹 On this day, women stop earning relative to men, despite working the same hours. It’s a clear sign that rather than progressing, we’ve taken a step back. It’s easy to feel frustrated or disheartened by statistics like this. But frustration alone won’t change the narrative. Progress demands action—collective and individual. So, what can we do? Support transparency: Encourage companies to openly share gender pay gap data and hold them accountable for change 🤝 Mentor and lift others: Help younger women in your field navigate their careers and negotiate better pay 🙋♀️ Use your voice: Spread awareness, challenge inequality when you see it, and keep the conversation alive 🗣️ At Pioneering People, we believe in paying fairly and on time, regardless of gender or background, and it’s time more organisations prioritised this too 🤝 Let’s not just share our outrage—let’s turn it into action. Together, we can push Equal Pay Day back where it belongs, the furthest date of the year 👋 What are your thoughts? How do you think we can all be part of the solution? #EqualPayDay #GenderEquality #Action #TogetherweRise

🌟 Today is Equal Pay Day in the UK 🌟 This marks the day when, due to the gender pay gap, women effectively stop earning compared to men and work for free for the rest of the year. The UK’s mean gender pay gap is now 11.3%, up from 10.4% last year—reversing a decade-long trend of narrowing the gap. This widening disparity means that on average, every month working women take home £631 less than men. This highlights ongoing challenges, including unequal pay, caregiving responsibilities, and fewer opportunities for women in higher-paying roles. Equal pay is not just a women's issue; it’s an economic and social imperative. Let’s push for policies that close the gap—like salary transparency, better parental leave, and support for caregivers. Women deserve equal pay for equal work. 💼💪 Join the conversation and get involved at https://lnkd.in/eEk6rUCJ . #EqualPayDay #GenderPayGap #JointheMovement

After positive progress the last few years, this is really sad to see we've taken a step back. Time to walk out! What is the gender pay gap? The difference between the average hourly pay of women and men, as a proportion of men’s pay. Each year the Fawcett Society marks Equal Pay Day – the day in the year when, based on the gender pay gap, women overall in the UK stop being paid compared to men. This year, government data has indicated a mean gender pay gap of 11.3% for full time-workers, which means that Equal Pay Day will be on 20th November. This compares to 10.4% in 2023. #EqualPayDay #PayEquality #fawcettsociety
Today we can confirm that Equal Pay Day 2024 will fall on 20th November. That's earlier than last year. This means that the UK's mean Gender Pay Gap has got worse for the first time since 2013. Equal Pay Day is a national campaign led by the Fawcett Society in the UK. It marks the day in the year when, based on the gender pay gap, women overall in the UK stop being paid compared to men. CEO Jemima Olchawski said, "It’s incredibly alarming to see the mean gender pay gap widen in 2024 and shows that without concerted effort most women won’t see equal pay in our working lifetime. “Today’s data confirms that the Gender Pay Gap increases with age as women take on more and more unpaid care work for children and older people. Tomorrow, at her first Budget, our first female Chancellor in history can right this wrong by investing to finally address the motherhood penalty and set the UK on a path to close the Gender Pay Gap for good. "The draft Employment Rights Bill and commitments to close the gap are important steps but today’s data clearly shows more must urgently be done. Our government must commit to a cross-government strategy to shrink the gender pay gap by 2030 – women cannot wait any longer." Read our explainer here 👇 https://lnkd.in/esbbsW37

Another statistic going the wrong way. The UK's gender pay gap has increased, and although there are some good reasons for this, according to the Fawcett Society research, done in collaboration with Giacomo Vagni, "...even when men and women work the same hours and in the same roles, nearly two-thirds of the gender pay gap remains unexplained." Just read that again - nearly two thirds of the pay gap is UNEXPLAINED - and this points to pay discrimination as a major factor still holding women back. They go on to suggest things that will close the gender pay gap for good: 💡 Default to flexible working in all sectors - it shouldn't be the exception 💡 Make childcare affordable and accessible to all 💡 Ensure men and women are paid equally for equal work 💡 Tackle intersectional pay gaps, as black, minoritised and disabled women are disproportionately affected Another problem that needs a systemic solution and you can help by supporting the Fawcett Society in their mission to achieve gender equality in pay and in the workplace. Very happy to see Rt Hon Rachel Reeves committing to tackling the gender pay gap. As my new book shows, mandatory action plans, improved flexibility and increased senior representation are critical, but we also need to keep pace with pay transparency developments #genderpayreporting #inequality #righttoknow #paytransparencydirective https://lnkd.in/eD99ECZC https://lnkd.in/ePyAFThD

The gender pay gap is widening! Which is why it is important to keep striving for equality. Together we can make a difference and the organisations we are working with at Karren Brady's Women in Business & Tech Expo are making a difference by looking at what women need to be supported in the workplace to thrive and progress, starting with inclusive recruitment and female friendly policies and networks. Creating networks where women can meet and support each other are really important and the partners we are working with such as SheCanCode are doing a fantastic job at this, helping women to stay in their chosen career and level up the gap: https://lnkd.in/epRDyqk7 Well done everyone. 🙌 Together we can make a difference and every little step helps to close the gap. #genderpaygap #inclusiverecruitment #closethegap #womeninleadership #diversity
