The UK’s mean gender pay gap is now 11.3%, up from 10.4% last year—reversing a decade-long trend of narrowing the gap. This widening disparity means that on average, every month working women take home £631 less than men. This highlights ongoing challenges, including unequal pay, caregiving responsibilities, and fewer opportunities for women in higher-paying roles. This year, it’s come even earlier than last year, and the stats are sobering: ▪️ The gender pay gap currently sits at 11.3% compared to 10.7% last year. ▪️ Women earn £631 less than men per month and £7,572 less annually. ▪️ For women from the global majority or with disabilities, the gap is even wider. Why? The reasons are systemic: ▪️ Women are more likely to take on lower-paid or part-time roles due to caregiving. ▪️ Flexible working options remain limited. ▪️ The "Motherhood Penalty" derails careers. The danger is seeing this as a woman's issue, rather than a leadership one. Truly 'human' leadership means creating workplaces that challenge bias, support flexibility, and promote equity at every level. “Happy” Equal Pay Day everyone. In the UK today is the day that the average working woman effectively stops getting paid. The average salary for working women in the UK is on average £7572 a year lower than the average working man. Depending on which data you look at and how, at the current rate this gap will close between 2044 and 2069. And we are well ahead of the global curve (though only actually 14th globally, with counties like New Zealand, Spain, Namibia and Moldova ahead of us. We need to do better. https://lnkd.in/eCszQsUZ.

The 20th November marked the Equal Pay Day. As part of the Equal Pay Alliance, we are calling for urgent action to tackle labour market inequality and improve employment rights. Delivering equality in employment is essential for the UK government to achieve its missions of kickstarting economic growth and breaking down barriers to opportunity. There is evidence to suggest that women’s employment is characterised by low pay, discrimination and harassment, underemployment, and precarious work. These inequalities are particularly acute for racially-minoritised women, Disabled women, younger and older women, and single mothers. These inequalities put them at greater risk of poverty and worsen the cost-of-living crisis, which disproportionately affects marginalised groups. Women’s poverty is also the key driver of child poverty, making action to tackle gender inequality critical to tackling child poverty and improving the life chances of all children and young people. The introduction of mandatory gender pay gap action plans is welcome, but publishing a plan is not the same as implementing one. Evidence shows that employers are unlikely to take action on equality unless they are compelled to do so by law. The government must meet its obligations under the public sector equality duty, and mainstream equality in the Employment Rights Bill and wider policy change, alongside specific measures to tackle inequalities. 🌟 https://lnkd.in/eW6BUFrf #EqualPay #EndPayGaps #EqualPayDay

It reflects the United Nations' dedication to upholding human rights and eliminating all forms of discrimination, especially against women and girls. 📌 Have you ever encountered or witnessed pay inequality in your workplace ⁉ Did you know ? 📍 Women earn 77 cents for every dollar men earn for work of equal value – with an even wider wage gap for women with children. 📍Women are more likely to be unemployed than men worldwide, with wide disparities regionally. Equal Pay Day 💵⚖️ The persistence of the gender pay gap is rooted in ingrained inequalities. Women, particularly migrant women, face overrepresentation in the informal sector, leading to low-paying, unsafe working conditions without social benefits. Additionally, women bear the burden of three more hours of daily care work than men, encompassing household tasks and caring for children and the elderly. The motherhood penalty exacerbates pay inequity, affecting working mothers with lower wages, particularly as the number of children they have increases. Gender stereotypes, discriminatory hiring practices, and promotion decisions also contribute to pay inequalities. The fight for equal pay and pay equity is urgent as income inequality disproportionately affects women. In the United States, Black women earn only 63.7 cents, Native women 59 cents, and Latinas 57 cents for every dollar that white men earn. Addressing underpaid and undervalued jobs in the care sector, where women make up 67% of the workers, is crucial. The Equal Pay International Coalition (EPIC), led by the ILO, UN Women, and OECD, is dedicated to achieving equal pay for women and men globally. By uniting a diverse set of actors with different areas of focus and expertise, EPIC supports governments, employers, workers, and their organizations to make concrete and coordinated progress towards this goal. According to the statistics, women from the global majority and women with disabilities have been working for free for longer due to experiencing more significant pay gaps. Some of the reasons that the pay gap still exists include: 👉 women are more likely than men to take lower paid or part-time roles to balance caregiving responsibilities 👉 lack of flexible working opportunities 👉 the Motherhood Penalty Things need to change. (Un)happy Equal Pay Day UK! It’s time to down tools ladies (of only it were that easy). Equal Pay Day is the day of the year when women stop earning relative to men due to the gender pay gap. Sadly, frustratingly, unacceptably, the date this year is two days earlier than last year when it fell on 22nd November. This means that, despite years of slow progress to close the UK's mean Gender Pay Gap, it has definitively widened for the first time since 2013. Information is taken from The Fawcett Society who have made this super short and helpful infographic. Gender pay gap for full time employees is 11.3% (can I adjust my tax bill accordingly?????). https://lnkd.in/eAjuUwmA There are many factors that contribute to the pay gap including pay discrimination, women’s unequal share of caring responsibilities, and a failure to promote women in the workplace. I believe we need both a bottom up and a top down approach in organisations paired with policy change. Bottom up - empowering women to believe their own worth and ask for the recognition they deserve which just so happens to be where my coaching programmes are focused (tap me up for more info and take things into your own hands)… We can take concerted action to shift things ‘at the top’ but we also need to take charge of our own lives through education, peer to peer support, male allyship (yay - more on that later with my good friend Tarquin Bennett-Coles 😉) and an unshakeable belief that we deserve better. Today we can confirm that Equal Pay Day 2024 will fall on 20th November. That's earlier than last year. This means that the UK's mean Gender Pay Gap has got worse for the first time since 2013. Equal Pay Day is a national campaign led by the Fawcett Society in the UK. It marks the day in the year when, based on the gender pay gap, women overall in the UK stop being paid compared to men. CEO Jemima Olchawski said,  "It’s incredibly alarming to see the mean gender pay gap widen in 2024 and shows that without concerted effort most women won’t see equal pay in our working lifetime.  “Today’s data confirms that the Gender Pay Gap increases with age as women take on more and more unpaid care work for children and older people. Tomorrow, at her first Budget, our first female Chancellor in history can right this wrong by investing to finally address the motherhood penalty and set the UK on a path to close the Gender Pay Gap for good.  "The draft Employment Rights Bill and commitments to close the gap are important steps but today’s data clearly shows more must urgently be done.
