Being Aunt Ambee
Growing up with a sister who is a decade older than me has meant that we've consistently found ourselves in different life stages. While I was reveling in the innocence of kindergarten, she was navigating the tumultuous waters of her first heartbreak. As I donned my cap and gown for high school graduation, she was embracing the challenges of motherhood with her first child. Now, as I eagerly anticipate my college graduation, she shares in my anticipation, eagerly awaiting the arrival of her fourth child. Though our timelines may never align perfectly, she has gifted me with two precious nieces and a nephew, soon to be a fourth in just a few weeks' time!
My journey into aunt-hood began unexpectedly at the tender age of 17. Welcoming my oldest niece, Amelia, into the world in October of 2019, I found myself thrust into a role I hadn't quite prepared for. COVID-19 brought with it unexpected twists, and amidst the chaos, I found solace in babysitting Amelia alongside my mom while my sister dedicated herself to her duties at a Cardiology office. Those initial months were filled with uncertainty; I hesitated to hold her, afraid of inadvertently causing harm. Yet, as I grew accustomed to my newfound role, I discovered a profound love and connection that surpassed any fear. Witnessing Amelia's first words, first steps, and myriad milestones became cherished memories etched into my heart forever.
I've learned invaluable lessons from my nieces and nephew, foremost among them being the art of patience. Admittedly, patience hasn't always been my forte, yet caring for three energetic youngsters under the age of five has provided ample opportunity for growth. Despite the whirlwind of activity they bring, they hold the key to my heart and soul. Witnessing their unwavering affection has a remarkable way of lifting my spirits, no matter the circumstance. One of Amelia's cherished phrases is "Ambee at school," occasionally swapped with "Ambee at work," which never fails to bring a smile to my face. Their excitement is my favorite thing to witness whenever they catch me on Facetime or during those rare weekends when I'm home. It warms my heart to see Amelia eagerly anticipating school, following in the footsteps of her beloved Aunt Ambee, since she seems to think I am the only family member who attended school. Moreover, observing my two nieces embark on dance classes at the same studio I spent 15 years at fills me with nostalgia. Amelia's innocent inquiry to my sister, "Did Aunt Ambee dance here when she was little?" remains one of the sweetest moments, affirming their desire to emulate me.
