This week started a complete renewal of our workspace – focusing mainly on our individual desks. We are replacing the old super long 2008 era fixed desks with new (somewhat shorter) sit to stand desks with better technology integration. With the liberated space, we will provide more collaboration areas, and a generally brighter lighter studio. The building owner is replacing all the lights, the carpet and upgrading the air conditioning to be more environmentally sustainable. Overall, it will be a transformation that has come about after an exhaustive search for the right office space. Working with Tenant CS, we established that Foster Street Surry Hills was still the best place for us – right size and good value and, as Time Out said, its one the “30 coolest streets in the world” right now so why would we move? https://lnkd.in/dv46VfG. After 10 years here, it has been great cleaning up and letting go of accumulated stuff – so much paper and redundant cables, it was a real shock how much an office collects – over 120 Dell monitors, 70 boring task chairs countless footrests, computer stands and things left in cupboards and forgotten. Our admin and IT teams have been great in sorting through what we need to keep. All the old gear is being sustainably recycled and re-homed minimising any waste. So, for the next few weeks our office is a small temporary space that has been sitting vacant downstairs, but most of us are working in a hybrid ‘at home’ mode and the transition this week has been totally seamless. This is the positive byproduct of the COVID era that shows how we can still deliver our work, and stay connected with our colleagues and our clients. None of this would be possible if we did not have the right culture in place that allows hybrid work while maintaining a high level of connection and communication. We will be back in a new and better workspace before the end of 2024 and we look forward to seeing the benefits of a renewed space into 2025. #renewal #officespace #tkdarchitects #interiordesign #architecture #fosterstreet #surryhills

The Belvoir St Theatre production of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time has just finished – with their new foyer. The renewal of this space is a great example of connection, relationships and determination. This project really pushed our creative process and we are very proud of the whole team and the amazing outcome which will, we hope, improve the audience experience at the Belvoir. Working with creative people from the world of theatre makes everything seem possible – we really enjoyed it! We’re delighted to share that our St Catherine’s Residential home in Grafton, has been named a finalist in the UDIA NSW & Urban Property Group Awards for Excellence in the Excellence in Aged Care and Excellence in Regional Development category. The recent redevelopment features an internal streetscape that creates a central and safe space where visitors and residents can enjoy the shared community space. Privacy is provided with internal living spaces that provide residents with an environment that fosters comfort, familiarity, engagement, and overall well-being. Centred around an existing mature fig tree, the home respects its long history in the community while providing space for new growth. Last week our Reconciliation Action Plan was published on the Reconciliation Australia website after a year of development, and coinciding with National Reconciliation Week we thought we should share some of what learnt and what we want to achieve. Our RAP has several intersecting purposes and it brings together work and ideas that we have been developing in our projects over the last decade. These critical intersections relate to our work as architects, designers and advocates, including: - Defining our corporate understanding of reconciliation - Providing guidance and focus to our staff as they undertake their own journey of reconciliation. - Establish and formalising partnerships that will make this journey rich and purposeful - Expressing our position to the wider community with clarity and purpose Our plan will continue to evolve as we build deeper and stronger connections through our work with First Nations peoples, whether they are Elders, specialist consultants, linguists or artists. This progression will not be linear and we recognise that at times we will have to reassess our approach as our knowledge expands. We will listen, we will reflect and we will always be respectful. This year’s theme of Now More Than Ever, is a reminder to all of us that, no matter what, the fight for justice and the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people will – and must – continue. Belvoir St Theatre DA approved! Last night, the City of Sydney Local Planning Panel approved a DA for upgrades to the Belvoir St Theatre’s warehouse building. The project, which was carefully designed by TKD Architects, will: – Provide additional floor space for the performing arts community. – Upgrade the existing building to deliver a versatile, fit-for-purpose and accessible working space. – Result in a refreshed, activated Elizabeth Street frontage that allows a visual connection to the Belvoir St Theatre building. – Allow a modest vertical addition, designed as office space for a tenant in an allied creative industry. – Deliver public art, which will be procured, manufactured and installed during the construction phase. Urbis was pleased to provide urban planning, urban design, traffic, heritage and social planning services for this project, which required variations to both the building height and floor space controls. We’d like to thank the City of Sydney for their collaborative approach on this exciting project and look forward to seeing it built.

Housing typologies will be spatially & operationally interrogated to uncover less invasive and therefore cheaper ways to convert existing commercial buildings. The title of their project: Home Office - Feasibility of Affordable Housing in Vacant Commercial Office Buildings of Sydney We are excited to see their progress and support him in this valuable research.

Parramatta North, Western Sydney Startup Hub is shortlisted in the NSW AIA 2024 awards. As the site of the first purpose-built Female Factory in Australia and over 175 years of mental health care, a key step in re-activating the place has been achieved through sensitive adaptation of buildings and open spaces for a range of new uses.
