“Micro-entrepreneurs” are rightly considered engines of prosperity for their families and neighbourhoods, often playing a vital role in keeping vulnerable communities afloat. But, we asked ourselves, is ‘#entrepreneurship’ really the right word to describe someone who starts a business out of necessity and a lack of viable income alternatives? In the article below we unpack the many realities of “necessity entrepreneurs” and attempt to (re)define what success means for them, considering several partner organisations that help them build the skills and resources they need to increase their incomes and stability – sometimes through offering essential services in their communities. https://lnkd.in/dfZWJZy9 BRAC BRAC Ultra-Poor Graduation Initiative Village Enterprise Kidogo SmartStart South Africa iDE (International Development Enterprises) myAgro 1001fontaines Fresh Life #microenterprises #microbusiness #microentrepreneurs

#Healthcare services account for just 20% of the factors that contribute to a person’s health; the other 80% is influenced by “social determinants”- conditions like housing, transportation and education into which people are born, work and live. Despite their importance, social determinants of #health are under-researched and resources to address them within the healthcare system are scarce. Community health workers in the US are well equipped to understand and identify the social needs of their communities, so the Community Health Worker Institute (CHWI) is integrating them into clinical teams, to bridge the gaps between medical care and social services in the #Bronx. We’re funding CHWI’s efforts to demonstrate the value and effectiveness of this approach. “Muso is a triumph of public #health nerdiness, with programs designed by experts, tested in the field and then rigorously measured for #impact... The cost of bringing one more person into the Muso health care network is only $22 per year.” With these words, Nick Kristof recently announced Muso as one of the three recipients of his 2024 Holiday Impact Prize. This prestigious recognition testifies to Muso’s remarkable growth over the past two decades, from a single site in peri-urban #Mali to providing life-saving care to over half a million patients today. We vigorously endorse Kristof’s accolade! Bella Jean is full of surprises… Yes, she’s a beautiful baby girl who truly lives up to her name and she’s also the 100,000th person that MiracleFeet has treated for #clubfoot since the organisation was created! Clubfoot is a congenital anomaly that affects 200,000 babies every year. We don’t see it in the US or Europe because doctors correct it soon after birth. MiracleFeet brings the same, non-surgical treatment to children in need around the world, using a series of plaster casts and a foot brace to guide the foot into the proper position. It is successful in 95% of cases and costs less than $500 per child. It’s also a powerful antidote to scepticism. And who doesn’t need a bit of that now and again? #EdTech – short for educational technology – is changing the way children learn and teachers teach, making education more engaging, personalised and accessible. For educators, the ultimate goal is that every learner has an equal chance to develop the skills they need to succeed. Imagine Worldwide’s tablet-based learning solutions work in any setting (school, community, or home), do not require an internet connection and can be charged via solar power. The software delivers a full research-based curriculum that is adaptive and contextually relevant. 𝗚𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗧 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗔𝗖𝗧 𝗜𝗡 𝗘𝗧𝗛𝗜𝗢𝗣𝗜𝗔𝗡 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗦𝗦𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗠𝗦 The Luminos Fund’s accelerated learning programme helps give the world’s out-of-school children a second chance to learn. In #Ethiopia, the Ministry of Education has embraced accelerated learning as a national strategy and is adopting Luminos’ programme in government schools across the country. During the 2023-24 school year, Luminos piloted a “structured pedagogy approach”, that included: 🏫 40 pilot classrooms in 2 districts of Sidama, Bona and Teticha 👩🎓 1,500 out-of-school children 👩🏫 14 days of teacher training plus routine supervision Last year, we had the opportunity to visit some of the government adoption classes. “What fascinates me,” Kasahun, a 32-year-old teacher at Menafesha School in Wonsho, Sidama, told us at the time, “is that the relationship with my students has completely changed: it has become a creative process where both the teacher and the students learn and are the source of knowledge. I’m always surprised at how quickly, easily and lively my students absorb my teaching, only to immediately turn their learning into their own creative thing”. A recent external evaluation shows the positive impact on students in the classroom. Look at the reading gains in the graph below and find the full evaluation report here: https://lnkd.in/erytbkUz #Evaluation #AcceleratedLearning #SecondChanceToLearn #OutOfSchoolChildren

Kham and Jai live in the urban slums of Chang Mai in Thailand. As the children of migrant labourers who left everything behind to look for work in the construction sector, they survived with very little. Invisible and alone, their early days were mostly passed in fear and silence while their parents were away. A few years have gone by since then and now life looks brighter as a red minibus arrives at the camp to take them to the Baan Dek Foundation nursery. It wasn’t easy for them to open up. It took time to make friends, learn how to play and enjoy a meal in company. It’s still hard, at times, to make sense of the world. The link below takes you to “A day in the life” of Kham and Jay, as told by the Baan Dek social workers who are helping the two children get their childhood back. The photos are by the amazing Ben Buckland. https://lnkd.in/dnh9ydMm #ADayInTheLife #nursery #EarlyChildhoodDevelopment #ChangMai

𝗕𝗜𝗖𝗬𝗖𝗟𝗘𝗦 𝗜𝗠𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗩𝗘 𝗟𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗟𝗜𝗛𝗢𝗢𝗗𝗦 – 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗢𝗙 𝗜𝗦 𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘𝗅 Between May 2023 and June 2024, World Bicycle Relief and IDinsight carried out the first-ever study of the economic benefits of #bicycle mobility. Prior studies had largely considered educational outcomes. But this research on a cohort of almost 1,500 adults living in Zambia’s Mumbwa rural district focused on whether gaining access to bicycles has a beneficial impact on livelihoods, including household consumption, income, productivity, social mobility and access to essential health services. After just one year – a challenging year in which Zambia suffered its worst drought in over four decades – the results nevertheless showed significant measurable improvements, confirming the transformative role bicycles can play in combating mobility poverty: 🍲 24% higher consumption of food and non-food household items. 💰 43% higher household monthly income. 💸 50% higher earnings for women. 🚲 22% less time spent travelling (an average of 4.2 hours per week), resulting in improved productivity. 🏥 36% increase in access to healthcare when needed. The catastrophic deterioration of security in #Haiti and its humanitarian fallout are making headlines around the world. But it would be a mistake to reduce the whole country and its population to the rising tide of gang violence. Despite it all, there are other stories to tell. One of these is Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL)’s tireless dedication and commitment. Since 2006, SOIL has been providing safe in-house #toilets and sanitation to families living in the poorest urban communities. And it has then been supporting these toilets with waste collection and treatment services that produce rich, organic compost which supports agriculture and reforestation. SOIL’s teams know exactly what “working in an extremely volatile context” means. But they are undeterred. Over the past year, they have seen their largest growth and currently serve more than 3,200 households, representing about 19,500 people. Now, what does that tell us about Haiti? Read more about SOIL’s story of persistence here: https://lnkd.in/d2SSQ5vN Find more about our support here: https://lnkd.in/dvjq7VHW
📸: SOIL / Cap-Haïtien Cathedral As an organization based in Haiti for over 18 years, we know what it is like to work alongside Haitians – who are some of the strongest, bravest, kindest, and most hard-working people we have ever known. 🇭🇹 Each morning, as the first light breaks over the city, Cap-Haitien is already alive with the sounds of effort and toil: madan sara setting up baskets of produce and wares at the local market, street vendors frying up paté and boiling coffee, motos buzzing along the boulevard carrying neatly dressed children headed to school. 🌺 By 6 a.m., SOIL’s sanitation workers are out and about, navigating their three-wheelers through the maze of winding streets and steep alleyways, collecting containers for our EkoLakay service. Despite recent headlines reading of disparagement and scorn, which we unconditionally condemn and refute, there’s a different story unfolding in our little corner of Haiti. A story of persistence, of innovation, of partnership – of what’s working. This past year, SOIL has seen the largest growth in our history with an over 40% increase in clients. 📈 We invite you to look to our team in Haiti as a beacon of hope and resilience; and of what we know to be true about the people who inhabit the beautiful country that we so love. 💚 #Ayiti #Okap #CapHaitien #SOILHaiti
