The ESRIC Start-up Support Programme is the first incubation programme exclusively dedicated to space resources utilization projects. The Programme provides a dedicated technical and business support from all our partners including researchers and engineers from European Space Agency - ESA, Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology (LIST) and European Space Resources Innovation Centre (ESRIC) and many other including a funding of 200,000 € for product development (MvP/PoC). 🔵 Benefits of the Programme: Selected projects from all around the world will receive a funding in the form of a non-repayable/Non-equity grant up to 200.000€. You will receive additional technical, business and marketing support from a team of experts in business innovation. You will also be able to benefit from a wide network of local and international partners. 🔴 Who can apply? The call is open to all worldwide #DeepTech and #SpaceTech project owners and small and medium-sized enterprises, incorporated no longer than 5 years ago. 🤯 The open call for #startups to apply and join ESA BIC Finland closes in a week! If you are still thinking if the program is for you, here are the answers to some of the most common questions that startups ask us: ⏳ What is the timeline for the use of the #funds? ➡️ Typically is 12 months, but it will depend on the plan you submit. 🔝 Do you have any estimate of the expected competition within this call? ➡️ There is no success rate per se, you are not competing with each other. We are hoping for every startup to succeed! 👨💻 If I applied before, can I apply again? ➡️ Yes! Some startups have applied 2 or 3 times if they didn't get in the first attempts. 📈 Does ESA take any #equity in my company? ➡️ No. We do not take any equity in your company. But we will request some reporting from you. 🤷♀️ What happens after I submit my application? ➡️ After the open call, the Tender Opening Board (TOB) will prescreen your application. If you pass the prescreening phase, you will be invited to pitch to the Tender Evaluation Board (TEB) in approximately one month. TEB will make the final funding decisions, with input from both ESA and Business Finland. Next Friday, August 16th, is the last day you can apply to enter the ESA BIC Finland community. Not everything is virtual! We’re getting used to virtual meeting rooms, virtual libraries and virtual conference locations. Thanks to the internet we can meet, find information, and share experiences whether we’re located. All this is great, but doesn’t remove the need to meet in real as well. Therefore you will find our ESA BICs in real buildings, with real rooms, and real people. A real sign at the entrance of such a building always gives me a good feeling. This is where it happens! This one, at the location of ESA BIC Denmark in Aarhus, is the latest one I have come across. The relatively modest building and the subtle design of the sign don’t reveal the treasures inside. You have to discover for yourself. I invite all ESA BICs to share a picture of their own signs and tell about their own treasures - the more that 1500 startups ESA has supported under its 20 years old business incubation program so far. SOWING THE SEEDS OF THE FUTURE 🌱 ... and what has that to do with a visitor's badge? It's Monday, and our own Mikael is back after a week-long, intensive summer school at BII. The aim of the summer school was to build the future startups within biotech and biosolutions. And that it did! Despite Denmark enjoying some of the most innovative research environments, leading to countless of spinouts, our founders still experience barriers to success. Barriers we ought to tear down, if we are to reap the benefits of those future seeds, including: 👣 "There is no try, only do": Founders are not only embarking to change global markets, but must also to change themselves, becoming leaders and not just scientists. We need to give them the leadership tools to succeed. 💡 "Publish and perish": Founders must unlearn everything they've been taught at university, as if they publish their groundbreaking idea before having a patent, the whole business can be killed then and there. Therefore, patents and IP rights are crucial. 🚧 "Regulation can kill your idea": Regulation is designed to manage yesterday's risks, not to incentivize the benefits of future ideas. That's great to avoid re-making earlier mistakes, but we miss innovation to deliver on planetary health. Updating European regulation is indeed needed. ⚰ "The Valley of Death is real - meet its twin": The deeptech sector is unfortunate to experience a known Valley of Death, due to the lack of funding between MVP and commercialization. And it now also have a twin, being lacking test and demo facilities to actually test your MVP. We need to secure access to world-class facilities, if we are to keep successful startups in Europe. You get the idea. We have lots of work ahead of us to keep Denmark on the forefront. And that's the mission of DI Bio. Oh, and the visitor's badge? As a way to keep BioInnovation Institute present in your mind, visitors are encouraged to moist the badge and plant it to see your new chamomile plant grow in your home. Neat. That's how you sow the seeds of the future. 🚀
