As an organization that works hand in hand with teachers on a daily basis, we are always amazed by their innovative approaches to teaching! Our Senior Director, Sarah Sugarman, reflects on her 5th grade teacher, Ms. Belanger, who was always thinking of creative ways to help her students learn. One day, as recess approached, she asked Sarah and the other students to line up. She whispered something in each student’s ear, and the first student whispered back and went outside. The next student whispered back and had to rejoin the line. Slowly, more students made it out to recess, while a few came back confused. The rest of the students laughed, wondering what was happening. When it was Sarah’s turn, Ms. B. whispered, “Spell surprise.” Sarah spelled it wrong, leaving out the first “r,” and was sent back to the line. Word quickly spread about that tricky silent letter. Within minutes, everyone passed the test and made it outside! At Lead by Learning, we help teachers think of innovative, sometimes surprising ways to help students learn. Support us by giving them the time and resources they need to understand their students’ needs. Donate to Lead by Learning this Giving Tuesday! Leave it to an 8 year old to remind me of the high yield that comes from active engagement vs passive engagement. It’s school fundraiser season. As our school’s Parent Teacher Association (PTA) treasurer, I take this seriously. We have a whole line up of field trips, staff & teacher appreciation, student support, & family/caregiver events that can only happen thanks to the generous support of our community. While I wasn’t going to phone this in, I also was laser focused on ME asking adults in our sphere to donate. Enter my 8 year old: “Mama, can I have a lemonade stand for my school? I want us to win top class!” Caregivers know: lemonade stands are high parental involvement enterprises. *Sigh* But he asked. So lemonade it was. 🍋 I immediately noticed 2 things: 1.) Once I included my son in the goal & let him drive how we got there, he was immediately invested. He saw himself as part of a “we”- WE are doing this together, WE are an elementary school, WE are a class 2.) The community showed up. They saw a product, saw a student working hard, saw a story they could enter into and they decided to join in. They were also engaged & invested. My lesson? Don’t underestimate the power of active engagement. PS We’re taking donations through Sunday 10/6. And my son’s class is #1. Just saying. 🙃

Tandem (Tandem, Partners in Early Learning, a fantastic organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area) works to give kids a great start to learning, focusing on children ages 0-5 (the sooner you can start learning, the better your life’s outcomes). Apparently, MacKenzie Scott endorses Tandem’s approach and execution: Scott’s philanthropic organization just granted $2 million to Tandem, a whopping grant. If you believe in children, if you believe in education, I encourage you to support Tandem with your money, or your time, or your re-posting of Savitha’s announcement below. Or, find an organization near you that focuses on children and figure out how to support them. Even one hour a year is helpful. Seriously. Go try it. (Way to go, Tandem!)
Tandem, Partners in Early Learning is extremely excited to share that we’ve received a $2 million gift from the Yield Giving Open Call! The #YieldGivingOpenCall – managed by Lever for Change – focused on elevating organizations working with people and in places experiencing the greatest need in the United States. Tandem does just that by building a society of supportive children's development by partnering with families and educators to co-create interactive learning experiences paired with books reflective of diverse cultures. This gift is a testament to our partnerships with families, educators, and community organizations, and would not be possible without your support. Teachers play such an important role in shaping the minds of our future generations. Take a moment this week to show appreciation for all the hard work and dedication they put into their job every day! One way to show support is by donating to organizations that support teachers, such as the Million Dollar Teacher Project. Additionally, you can donate directly to classrooms to help provide necessary supplies for students. Just ask your nearest school, teacher friends, or send me a message! Another way to show support is by recognizing and thanking teachers on social media. Post about a teacher's dedication and tag them and their school to show your appreciation publicly. If you are a teacher, don't forget to take advantage of some special deals and discounts that are available during Teacher Appreciation Week. Check out this list of places where you can score some great deals: https://shorturl.at/oyzCM Let's all come together to show our gratitude and support for teachers who work tirelessly to educate and inspire our youth. Thank you, teachers, for all that you do! 📚🍎 #TeacherAppreciation #SupportTeachers Timothy Honan + Marcela Campbell + Haven Guyer + Lloyd Hopkins

Did you know that most teachers spend at least $500 each year to fund their classroom environment? We purchase snacks, school supplies, classroom decorations, books, organizational equipment, and supplementary curriculum, among other things. In my third year of teaching, I realized that being a teacher didn't have to mean going broke to fund my classroom. I started using programs like DonorsChoose and AdoptAClassroom.org to help me with classroom expenses and projects for my students. I advise both new and experienced teachers to create accounts on these platforms and share them with their friends. These platforms have allowed me to tap into my personal and professional networks to ask for resources. I've found that there are always people willing to support teachers. Like most educators, I can always use a helping hand, and I've found that many are happy to help. Sometimes it's our relatives and friends, and other times it's an anonymous donor or an organization. I've had tremendous success using these platforms over the years, and I'm very grateful that they exist to help teachers. If you're a teacher or you know one who is about to spend a lot of money at Lakeshore for the "biggest sale of the year," please consider signing up for an AdoptaClassroom account first. Then, share your page link with people who know you. The worst thing they can do is ignore it, and the best thing they can do is donate or share your link on their social media timelines. #backtoschool #elementary #education #teachers

🎒🎒🎒 Tevi’s Innovative Approach to Learning: A Creative Path for Better Education 🎒At EKL, education goes beyond traditional methods. Tevi, one of our tutors, develops unique, engaging materials for children, like using bottle caps for math kits or paper-cut alphabets. Adapting her approach based on each child’s level, personality, and mood, Tevi incorporates games and sensory activities to make learning fun and immersive. 🎒Her innovative methods are especially impactful in VIP classes, where one-on-one sessions help struggling students close gaps in education. Many families face financial hardships that deprioritize schooling, but Tevi’s personalized lessons offer these children a chance to thrive, boosting their confidence and opening pathways out of poverty. 🎒 Our education project is on the way to level up. Thanks a lot to the 2 first contributors to support our education project, we have already raised €200 on Hello Asso. Now, let’s go the extra mile together to reach our final fundraising goal by the end of the year. Want to be part of this inspiring journey? - Like and share this post on your feed, story, or DM it to your network. - Consider making a donation today or anytime later before 31/01/2025. Disrupt Gives is supporting a great cause! Did you know that nearly 20,000 in SBISD are considered economically disadvantaged? These students have families who make difficult choices on where to use their resources, and pencils, pens, notebooks, and highlighters are not always near the top of the list. As funding shrinks and economic challenges grow, our campuses and our teachers are unable to fill those gaps. That 's where Spring Branch Education Foundation and generous donors can step in to help. Distupt Gives has joined SBEF School Supplies Co-Chairs, Becky Fenn, and Kristi Robishaw, as they continue to equip Spring Branch ISD students with the tools they need to successfully start the school year. $15 can provide school supplies for a student $330 can provide school supplies for an entire classroom of elementary school students $1,650 can provide school supplies for an entire elementary school grade level Please consider making a donation to SBEF's Project School Supplies https://lnkd.in/gRc7YS2t #nonprofitssupportingnonprofits #sbef #sbisd #students #schoolsupplies
