In the year 2024, we present technologies in the change of time: from fantasies in science fiction movies to actual technological reality. Which technologies were imagined or shown in films several years or decades ago? What was pure technological fantasy in the past and is reality today? We will get to the bottom of this and link science fiction films with reality as part of our conference. 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗧𝘄𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗲'𝘀 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗢𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵-𝘁𝗲𝗰𝗵 𝗳𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗿𝘆 𝘄𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘀𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺 𝗽𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀 Yesterday, a broad group of stakeholders came together to put their shoulders to the wheel of New Origin. New Origin is a new commercial foundry for photonic chips, to be realised in Twente in the foreseeable future. One of the necessary ingredients for companies to innovate on integrated photonics is to have parties that supply chips. New Origin is one such party that is an essential link within the chip production chain.   During the day, companies, investors, development partners, government and knowledge institutions spoke at length about the common interest, the vision of the concept and the necessary preconditions. Two things in particular were called for: do it now and do it with an experienced dedicated team. At the end of the day, the outcomes were presented to the directors of the partners involved and commitment was both collected and shown to speed up realisation. A team from the University of Twente and Oost NL will work together with companies from the Twente ecosystem to further shape the business case. Suitable accommodation and the installation of production processes are also under active consideration.   New Origin looks back on a fruitful day where companies, knowledge institutions, investors, governments and development partners found each other in the need for the foundry and were willing to put their shoulders to the wheel together. More than 700 leaders from governments and the semiconductor and photonic chip industry are meeting in Eindhoven during PIC Summit Europe 2024 to discuss the future of the industry. The summit features keynotes and panels with leaders including the Acting Director Enabling and Emerging Technologies of the EU Commission Gustav Kalbe, Acting Director-General of Economic Affairs Tjerk Opmeer, Airbus Head of Technology Sytze Kampen, Principal Technology Analyst at Sony Faisal Kamran, and Head of Silicon Photonics at Nokia Bell Labs Nicolas Fontaine. Gustav Kalbe said, “You can see how ubiquitous applications for integrated photonics are becoming. They’re becoming a fundamental building block. The need is ever-increasing, and ever-critical because photonics underpins so many other technologies.” Eelko Brinkhoff, CEO of PhotonDelta, said: “Photonic chip technology offers solutions to big societal challenges in areas such as mobility, energy, climate change, food, and health. The hurdle we need to overcome is bringing these solutions to market faster. To do this, we need a holistic approach that combines public and private funding, entrepreneurship, and international cooperation. This is why PIC Summit Europe has placed a strong focus on stimulating cooperation between photonic and electronic chip industries, academics, industry leaders, policymakers, and value chain partners, from material suppliers to end-users. Both in Eindhoven and Twente pilot lines, or pilot factories, can be started up to further test and grow this innovative technology. Thanks to the National Growth Fund project PhotonDelta, in which dozens of SMEs collaborate with technology and innovation partners, the Netherlands was already well positioned for photonic chip production. Knowledge institute TNO, TU Eindhoven and the University of Twente can now realise the proposed facilities. Dutch public funding will be further elaborated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs in the coming period. The pilot lines are then expected to be able to start in mid-2025. Coordinated by the NCSR "DEMOKRITOS" in Athens, this groundbreaking initiative brings together a consortium of 9 partners from 7 countries, with a budget of €3.6 million over the next three years.   💡 What makes SUPERLASER unique? Good news! The proposal for the ChipNL Competence Center has been submitted for approval by the European Commission. Our organization has fruitfully and constructively worked together with ChipTech Twente, High Tech NL, Oost NL (as representatives of the ROMs), TNO, imec the Netherlands and JePPIX on writing the proposal for the ChipNL Competence Center. The proposal has been supported by Ministry of Economic Affairs and the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) | Partner in Sustainable Development. The main focus is on providing knowledge on semiconductor manufacturing equipment, chip design, integrated photonics, quantum and heterogeneous integration. Therefore, a team has been set up that consists of business developers and supply chain managers who help startups, scaleups, sme’s, application markets and other semiconductor related companies with knowledge dissemination, supply chain coordination towards among others pilot lines and design platform, talent and skills development, internationalization, funding, and innovation programs. Last Thursday marked a major milestone as #PIXEurope, a new European pilot line for Advanced Photonic Integrated Circuits (PIC), was launched. 💥 Aiming to reinforce the European Union’s commitment to strengthening its #semiconductor and #photonics landscape, the Chips Joint Undertaking (Chips JU) has now officially entered negotiations to establish PIXEurope. PIXEurope set out to become the world’s first open-access ecosystem for PICs, uniting Europe’s leading research organizations. This pilot line will drive innovation across the PIC value chain, from chip design and fabrication to packaging and reliability testing. With a total project investment of €380 million, €133 million is earmarked the Netherlands, with €66.3 million coming directly from the EU Chips Act. The EU Chips Act (2023) centers on three pillars—capacity building, strategic autonomy, and resilience—to elevate Europe’s semiconductor industry. With this funding, the Netherlands aims to further boost the PIC ecosystem by expanding production capacity and deepening expertise in photonic chip manufacturing. 🏭 This announcement underscores the growing importance of integrated photonic chips in the semiconductor industry, especially in light of the rapid rise in AI demand. These chips are critical for sustainable advancements, such as offering faster speeds, greater capacity, and lower energy consumption in data communication, quantum computing, and enable new sensing applications across healthcare, food, and mobility sectors. Today it was our pleasure to host the #Polaris consortium at Philips in Best. The Polaris project will realize breakthrough technology for #micro-electronic Radio Frequency (#RF) Systems and is funded through the National Growth Fund (#Nationaal #Groeifonds). Polaris brings together the existing Dutch ecosystems #radar, #MRI and #telecom. This collaboration will deliver highly innovative technology for #radically #integrated #systems, with huge potential for novel application areas. This will boost the #Dutch #economy and will lead to new #start-ups and #scale-ups. The consortium consists of large #industry, #small-and-medium #enterprises, #research institutes, #universities and Regional Development Agencies (#ROMs). The project will kick-off in September.
