In 1954, Roger Bannister ran the very first sub 4-minute mile in the world. Once Bannister proved it could be done, it was only 46 days later that another runner broke it again...beating Bannister’s time. Just one year later, three runners broke the 4-minute barrier in the SAME race. Since then, more than 1,700 runners have broken a barrier that was once considered beyond reach. But it gets better... Before Bannister’s run, people believed that a 4-minute mile may only be possible in perfect conditions; perfect weather, on a particular kind of track, with the energy of a huge cheering crowd. But Bannister did it on a cold dreary day, on a wet track, in front of a small crowd. Do you think you have to have "perfect conditions" to go after your dream? On the course today, my golf score wasn't the highlight, but taking the time to appreciate the splendor of North Georgia surely was. In life and business, our swings might not always land like we may want them to, but there's beauty in the attempt. On Saturday, I ran the Proud to Run Chicago 10k race: it was my worst race experience to date. The temperature at 6:30a.m was 75 degrees, and the dew point was 72. Point blank: the conditions were miserable, the course was not well marked, and it was the first race I ever considered a “DNF” - did not finish. Every second on the course was more challenging than the last, and despite all odds, I even got a new small personal record finish time. The record was pure “this cannot be over soon enough” adrenaline, with many walk and hydration stops I usually don’t need. A turn in the last mile of the course was poorly marked, which delayed my finish as I tried to sort out where I was supposed to go. The race was physically taxing, but the toll was riddled with mental obstacles. I try to hope that our bad days and moments give us something to learn for the good ones. We take kernels and nuggets of “what did I learn from this?” as we shape our good days and moments to come. As I head into week 4 of marathon training, I know this is certainly not the last bad run I’ll have, but I’m hoping it shapes and molds my better moments in the runs to come this week. We can sit and dwell in our moments of doubt, we can reflect on the things we wish happened differently, conversations and meetings that took turns or lacked clarity and then we move forward: we can take negative situations, outcomes, and setbacks and make ourselves a new path onward with what we’ve learned, and some lemonade in the process.
