Affordable housing is an issue for the Lawrence community. Tenants to Homeowners is a local nonprofit that has helped more than 350 families become homeowners since 1992 by building or rehabbing homes and selling them to those who qualify at a greatly reduced cost. For instance, the yellow home second from the left in this photo sold in February for $70k under market value. We're a proud partner of this incredibly important organization, installing solar on many of their new builds to decrease the homeowners' monthly electric bills and reduce the home's impact on the environment. For these recent new builds, we've been installing REC solar panels. These all-black modules are warrantied for 25 years and have one of the lowest degradation rates on the market today. 🌟 Fuelling Hope: Our Support for Act on Energy's Complex Case Worker Initiative 🕛 Over the past two years, Heart of England Community Energy (HECE) has dedicated over £70,000 to support Act on Energy's Complex Case Worker initiative, addressing the impact of rising bills amidst the cost-of-living crisis in Warwickshire. 🤝 The "Complex Case Worker" initiative offers personalised assistance to vulnerable individuals, providing energy-saving guidance, grants access, and promoting warmer living conditions to tackle fuel poverty head-on. So far, the initiative has made a significant impact by supporting a total of 723 households, surpassing our initial target of 400. The impact of the project has been profound, as evidenced by HECE's funding. The Kent County Essential Needs Task Force is working to help change the stigma of asking for help. So are we. In 2023, utility assistance agencies in Kent County issued over 19,000 payments, providing over $6 million in payments, to help households maintain electric, heat, and water services. The need for utility assistance is great. Some households, however, may not pursue help due to a lack of understanding of how or where to apply, or due to stigma associated with applying for assistance. Over the course of the next few weeks, we’ll be sharing information and stories about receiving utility assistance. This information will aim to destigmatize utility assistance and provide resources to access support. The reality is there is no shame in asking for assistance. Affordable utilities are a human right. Do you know someone who needs assistance now? Go to gethelpkent.org to get started.

Today, the DC Council meets to discuss proposed legislation to reform the Emergency Rental Assistance program in the face of an affordable housing crisis and rent arrears. We urge members of the Council to support the Emergency Rental Assistance Reform Emergency Amendment Act of 2024, as introduced. We also acknowledge that this legislation reform is the first step, in a series of actions needed to right-side our affordable housing industry. Beyond this emergency legislation, more reforms of the ERAP program are needed to prioritize at-risk households, prioritize affordable housing, and prioritize timely processing. These would further stabilize the ecosystem long-term. As CDFIs committed to Washington, DC, we pledge our cooperation and assistance in contributing to these solutions.
