𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘀 At Synergy Marine Group we're inspired by our industry's steps toward sustainability, as recently further highlighted by Cargill's initiative on wind-assisted propulsion with the bulk carrier “PYXIS OCEAN”, which is a major leap forward in the maritime sector's green transition. Cargill's six month trial has clearly demonstrated wind power's vital role in maritime decarbonisation, and this real-world application is a significant advance along our collective pathway towards environmental sustainability. The endeavour also teaches us an important lesson: sustainability's path is complex and multifaceted. Our journey to a greener future isn't about finding a single solution but embracing a circular economy and optimising a variety of available resources, including wind, in this case. The project's success, which also involved saving an average of three tonnes of fuel daily, isn't a win just for Cargill but for the entire maritime industry and our planet. Very well done indeed also to the Master, Chief Engineer and crew of the “PYXIS OCEAN”. Their openness to new technologies and operational methods has been crucial in proving that wind power can play an important role. Among other renewable sources, it will significantly contribute to our industry's greener future, on a journey that demands collaboration, innovation and a shared vision for a sustainable maritime ecosystem. I've received several messages from colleagues and friends within the industry concerning the issue of modification of the traditional line of sight required by SOLAS. However, that can be adeptly addressed by integrating a camera system mounted on the foremast, supplemented by multiple monitors on the bridge. This setup provides superior imagery and ensures safety and compliance without sacrificing innovation. Reducing the climate impact of our product transports is a key component of our global emission reduction plan. To advance on our action plan, we always test and evaluate new transport means, routes as well as fuel sources. Our latest pilot is a three-month pilot project that sees to the use of hydrotreated vegetable oil (a type of biofuel known as HVO100)- instead of fossil-based fuel, for all our products’ ground transports from Sweden to Germany, France, and the Netherlands. While the project introduces a new workflow, adding an extra supplier to our transport processes, it also sees a substantial reduction of the climate footprint associated with the transports mentioned. EU’s view on decarbonizing maritime and inland waterways transport According to the European Union Research and innovation for climate neutrality by 2050 report, decarbonizing maritime and inland waterways transport is another significant challenge as the shipping industry currently relies almost exclusively on fossil fuels. The main challenge here is associated with cost and the high energy density required to cover long maritime distances. Alternative fuels Alternative fuels, such as biofuels, synfuels, ammonia or hydrogen, and carbon capture technologies at motor engine point sources appear to be the most promising avenues for decarbonizing long distance maritime transport, while electric ferries and fuel cells could be the solution for short distance shipping. Collaboration between value chains However, to decarbonise the shipping sector, a system-wide thinking is required and the three value chains that are central to steering the sector’s decarbonization must be involved. These include: the fuel chain; the shipbuilding chain; and the operations chain. Alternative energy and propulsion According to the EU, key Research & Innovation (R&I) interventions across these value chains should be considered together. R&I efforts linked to sail propulsion technologies (e.g. use of sails, rotors and kites as an auxiliary propulsion source) should also be investigated, especially as performance gains could be important but are still uncertain and these solution require a rethink of the mode of navigation (e.g. modification of sear routes, reduction of speed, etc.). Ocean-based carbon removal As EU notes, R&D funding for ocean-based carbon removals ought to further develop, assess potentials and risks of currently immature methods (artificial up-/down welling, ocean alkalinity enhancement (OAE), and micro-nutrient fertilisation). R&D is also needed to ensure the feasibility of more mature approaches (mangroves, seagrass and kelp farming) through appropriate implementation and monitoring technologies and practices that track both the carbon flows and ecosystem effects under realistic application scenarios – including remote sensing. Sustainability news 🧡 The recent success of retrofitting wind-assist technology to the cargo ship Pyxis Ocean demonstrates the significant potential of innovative solutions in reducing fuel consumption and carbon emissions in the shipping industry. During a six-month trial period, the Pyxis Ocean, equipped with BAR Technologies designed WindWings, saw a remarkable reduction in fuel use and CO2 emissions. On average, the ship consumed three tonnes less fuel each day, resulting in savings equivalent to removing 480 cars from the roads annually. These results underscore the promising role of wind-assist technologies in mitigating the environmental impact of maritime transportation. While the impact of this trial represents just a fraction of the global shipping industry's emissions, it serves as a beacon of hope for sustainable transformation. Cargill, the shipping firm behind the initiative, recognises the significance of wind-assist technologies in achieving decarbonisation goals, emphasising their cost-effectiveness and long-term viability. As we navigate towards a greener future, the imperative for change becomes increasingly clear. Retrofitting existing fleets with wind-assist technology presents a practical and efficient approach to reducing emissions, especially considering the substantial lead times for new ship deliveries. With over 250 ports engaged in facilitating the adoption of wind-assist technologies, the momentum for sustainable shipping practices continues to grow. How do shipping companies expect their technology and fuel mix to look like in 2030 and 2050? That was the key question in a survey conducted by the Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD), the Global Maritime Forum, and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon Shipping. ✔ Two-thirds of all respondents (representing 20% of global capacity) have a view on their fuel mix in 2030 and 2050 ✔ 81% of respondents expect to use three or more fuel families within their own fleets ✔ No single fuel is expected to be the industry standard in 2050. #Global capacity to directly suck #CO2 from air has just quadrupled A new plant in Iceland operated by the firm Climeworks can remove up to 36,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the air per year, more than quadrupling existing global capabilities The #world’s largest facility for extracting carbon dioxide directly from the atmosphere is up and running in Iceland, more than quadrupling the world’s total capacity for direct air capture (#DAC). Globally, DAC #projects to date only collectively capture around 10,000 tonnes of carbon per year from the atmosphere.
