Young refugees provide inputs and recommendations to the UN Summit of the Future, and the strategy for Denmark's engagement in Africa 🙌 🔸 On #InternationalYouthDay, 12th of August 2024, Danish Refugee Council / Dansk Flygtningehjælp and partners co-hosted the event: "Young People: The World's Biggest Opportunity", putting young people affected by displacement at the heart of the conversation. 🔸 The event resulted in strong recommendations put forward by young leaders on key topics including #selfreliance, #climatechangeand #peacebuilding to inform key contemporary policy processes of our time. Read more about the event and find the recommendations here 👉 https://bit.ly/4cPCtu1 🔸 With the world being home to the largest generation of young people in history, we must listen to what young people have to say and include them in policy processes and in developing future opportunities and solutions to the challenges they are facing. Only by doing so, we can unlock their full potential and thus the world's biggest opportunity. #RefugeeYouthInAction ▪️ The event was co-organised by the Danish With and For Youth Network consisting of: Dansk Flygtningehjælp, Røde Kors, Ungdommens Røde Kors, ActionAid Denmark, Oxfam Danmark, PlanBørnefonden, Red Barnet and DFUNK - Dansk Flygtningehjælp Ungdom.

When false claims and worrying narratives surrounding refugees spread out, it's our duty to intervene and contrast this phenomena, most and foremost to protect those who are targeted and that should always be protected by the right to a safe refuge, which include the respect of their human dignity. For this reason we are very happy to announce that thanks to the REFUGIN Project , we have a great training available! 🧑🏫Together with the longstanding one, dedicated to Educational and Civic professionals working with displaced youth through 3 modules (available here 📌 https://shorturl.at/MjYsn) , this amazing project has now designed a training initiative for Youngsters in Refugee-like situations! This short course is specially designed for young people navigating the challenges of displacement, and throughout its 4 modules aims to enhance their skills across interpersonal, intrapersonal, and socio-cultural dimensions. It aims to provide support, tips, and suggestions so these can better manage their new challenges! To better address young refugees specific needs, the training initiative has two different courses: 🙋One for 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘃𝗶𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝟭𝟴 𝘁𝗼 𝟮𝟱 𝘆𝗲𝗮𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲: ➡️ https://shorturl.at/tCwfe 🧑🧒 One for youngsters from 14 to 17 years of age in refugee-like situations, which would need a training mentor to help register them here: ➡️ https://shorturl.at/s2JqX Join us in making a difference in the lives of young people by encouraging participation in this meaningful and supportive learning experience. 💪 Let's empower our youth and key professionals today in the hope we won't ever hear again people saying that refugees and migrants eat people's pets... 🔁 Share this course if you work with or know young individuals in refugee-like situations. RLON takeaways 2024. #RefugeeselfRelianceInitive. #KRLON #RELON #GRF #Davision #RESDA #Hodarifoundation #YIDA #CIYOTA #LIVEGREEN #Sustainability.
Earlier this month, we held a refugee-led organization learning exchange in Kampala to discuss challenges and opportunities for #RLO involvement in local decision-making — and there were quite a few takeaways! ✍ Thank you to the refugee-led organizations and representatives from the Government of Uganda, UN, international NGO community, and private sector who joined us and contributed to this informative and powerful convening. Co-designed and co-facilitated with RLOs, these country-level learning exchanges aim to equip participants with the knowledge, tools, and access needed to build community and take their shared learning forward to influence national, regional, and global discussions on refugee self-reliance. We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to both the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation for supporting this learning exchange series and our partners, RefugePoint, RELON UGANDA, and Refugees SEAT, with whom we collaborated to facilitate this event in Kampala. Stay tuned for a comprehensive report with recommendations and learnings that emerged from the convening in the coming weeks! ✅

It was a privilege to participate in this training, which brought together funders, regulators, NGOs, humanitarian agencies, policy-makers and FSPs. The scale and scope of forced displacement globally demands dynamic and comprehensive solutions, and our discussions really helped me to better understand how the sector is responding. Some takeaways: • Creating an enabling environment for the financial inclusion of FDPs starts with national legislation – so it was great to hear the ongoing commitment by the central banks of Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia. • A huge amount of progress is being made to digitize cash transfers – as we heard from Equity Bank Limited and Shabelle Bank in Ethiopia. But there's more to be done by the sector in making this a pathway to connect FDPs to a bigger pool of financial services. • We were reminded that innovation starts with listening to the problem-holder. We can’t just jump to solutions. It was encouraging to see our financial diaries and participatory video approach with refugees in Uganda highlighted as an example of human-centred design. • Whilst there are a lot of best practices emerging, we lack a high level global overview of who’s doing what in this space and what the key learnings are. This year’s European Microfinance Platform (e-MFP) week will be a great opportunity to address this gap. • Participants had mixed experiences with guarantees. Some of the FSPs use them to de-risk lending to FDPs, but others don’t find them effective - partly because they reinforce the perception that FDPs are a poor credit risk. • On that note, it was encouraging to hear such positive experiences from the FSPs themselves on lending to refugees (all reporting very strong repayment rates, without guarantees!). • Some organizations are doing great work to helping the most vulnerable FDPs get on the first step on the ladder towards financial inclusion and self-reliance, like Save the Children International’s graduation approach (thanks Fidel Saad for sharing). • Natacha Brice highlighted CARE’s learnings on its VSLAs in Emergencies model (VSLAiE). As ever, CARE leads the way in its commitment to sharing lessons with the wider industry. • Finally, the Bank of Tanzania highlighted that weather-related events have become the main driver of internal displacement in Tanzania. The last takeaway is for me the most top of mind. The Global Forum on Migration and Development in January reported that climate change is now the leading cause of new displacements globally. We need to be ready for mass displacements on a different scale. As Mary Ellen Iskenderian, President and CEO at Women's World Banking, so brilliantly said: “The financial system has a responsibility to all displaced populations to provide services that are readily available, accessible, and useful in times of crisis.” Special thanks to Alia Nazar - Farhat, Yousra Hamed, Micol Pistelli, Petronella Chigara-Dhitima and Margarita Lalayan
