Just Because You're Getting Interviews Doesn't Your Unemployment Job Search Is Going Well

Many unemployed job seekers who get are getting interviews, think that their job search is going well, because they are getting interviews, so they'll land a job soon.

Don't get me wrong, it's great to get interviews. But it's not enough to land a job.

Pre-Covid, we had a strong job market with candidate shortages. Interviews during candidate shortages make the odds much greater that you'd convert interviews into job offers.

But 2024's job market is a lot more competitive, with 80M+ currently employed and unemployed job seekers competing for 7.4M advertised jobs), so there are no longer candidate shortages. It's the exact opposite - job shortages.

Most job seekers continue to use strategies designed towards candidate shortages, and are surprised when they fail during the opposite environment, when there are 10.8 times more candidates than advertised jobs.

There's a good chance you're making similar mistakes if any of these apply to your unemployment job search:

  1. You Describe Yourself As Qualified In Interviews And On Your Resume: Qualified isn't good enough when there are many qualified candidates.
  2. Your Resume Is Average: Qualified = Average and average resumes aren't good enough when competing against many qualified candidates.
  3. You're Applying For Jobs Online: You fail to get interviews for jobs when you're qualified; When you do get interviews, you're already too late to win the job ... and the interviews you do get are the lowest quality interviews given by the employer, usually to document reasons the employer is rejecting you, not because they are considering you for hire.
  4. Your Networking Strategies Aren't Effective: They may get you interviews, but they get you the same poop quality interviews as when you apply online.
  5. Your Network Is Too Small: You need to scale your network, but LinkedIn and other sources haven't been effective to start the conversations that scale your network.
  6. You Continue To Do The Same Things That Aren't Working, Hoping For Different Results: The definition of insanity.
  7. You Don't Even Recognize You're Making These Mistakes: You're so used to making these mistake in your resume and job search, you don't even realize they are mistakes that keep you from landing a job.
