SigningBanks.UK is our initiative aimed at bridging the gap between Deaf consumers and the banking and financial services sector. Especially for those customers whose first language is sign language. We have learnt so much about that customer journey from Rachel Vann Kathryn Townsend Mark Applin Alistair Griffin Rebecca Mansell MCIOF Reg Cobb Daniel Clements Anna Roughley Tamzin Bayne Teri Devine Steve Korris as members of our Advisory Board. And guided by the wisdom of our co-chair James West who currently steers the Advisory Board with Reg Cobb. We are only just getting going on our mission to make banking and finance more accessible to Deaf consumers. Our hopes are that by next #PurpleTuesday we will have more to shout out and we will have connected with more #Deafallies within banking and finance. We have seen some real progress made by the banks and financial services firms shepherded by Kathryn Townsend who leads an Industry Working Group. Inclusivity and Accessibility: Integrating BSL ensures our educational resources are accessible to children and families who use sign language, creating an inclusive atmosphere where every child feels welcome and valued. Empowering Families: Having BSL across all educational platforms means that families with deaf members have equal access to information, allowing them to fully engage with and support their child's educational journey. At Roots Federation, we believe every child deserves the best start, and integrating BSL is a step toward making education accessible for all. 💔 Reflecting on My Journey as a Deaf Student 💔 Forty years ago, I navigated school without access to a BSL interpreter until college (1978-1995). The reality of being deaf in a system that didn’t prioritize accessibility was challenging. I often felt isolated and struggled to engage with my peers and teachers. It’s a reminder of how crucial it is to advocate for inclusivity in education. Everyone deserves the chance to learn and grow in an environment where they feel supported. Accessibility matters. This powerful clip from Waterloo Road shows what can happen when a deaf pupil starts school without adequate or appropriate support in place. Thanks to the BBC for helping to highlight the challenges faced by the Deaf community.
