📢 Introducing speakers of the #BreakoutSession IIb at the #IAUTokyo2024 Conference! The IAU 2024 International Conference, taking place this November at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, includes seven breakout sessions on various topics of interest to the higher education community. This session will consider "Leading Values-based International Cooperation." We at the IAU look forward to hearing from the four distinguished speakers on this panel: - Emnet Tadesse Woldegiorgis, Director of the Ali Mazrui Centre for Higher Education Studies, University of Johannesburg, South Africa - Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti, Vice President for International Relations and Corporate Communication, Mahidol University, Thailand - Sandra den Otter, Vice Provost Global Engagement, Queen's University, Canada - Jane Knight, Professor, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto, Canada About the Session: The IAU advocates for fair and inclusive internationalization that encompasses and values the diverse voices of nations, peoples, and cultures worldwide. An internationalization that fosters an equitable global community and serves the common global good through circulation of knowledge and supports societal development. However, Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) often find themselves having to navigate political and economic pressures that might be in contrast with this vision of internationalization. How can HEIs take on a leadership role in advancing values-based international cooperation when they are bound by ever more restrictive rules and regulations imposed by their respective governments? 📢 Introducing the speakers of Plenary Session III: Fostering #Equity, #HumanDignity, and a Culture of Peace through #HigherEducation at the #IAUTokyo2024 Conference. About the session: Today, universities hold a social and moral responsibility towards humanity in contributing to the cultivation of equity, human dignity, and a culture of peace. Therefore this session will address these critical questions: - How does a university's responsibility translate into action across the different missions of the university? - What can universities do to counter these trends and empower students and staff to become agents of change? - How can we make sure that this role of universities is sufficiently recognized and avert a tendency that assess universities solely on their utility, employability, and economic return on investment? This panel will be chaired & moderated by IAU President Andrew Deeks, Vice Chancellor and President, Murdoch University, #Australia. He will be joined by the following distinguished speakers: - Aisha Khurram, First Female Afghan Youth Representative to the #UN, Hertie School of Governance, #Germany - David Quigley, Provost and Dean of Faculties, Boston College, #USA - Stefania Giannini (tbc), Assistant Director-General for Education, UNESCO The #IAU International Conference 2024 #IC24 will take place in November (22-24) at Sophia University in #Tokyo, #Japan. An inspirational meeting in Madrid with Juan Cruz Cigudosa, secretary of state at the Ministry of Science and Innovation of Spain to explore Spanish universities' powerful social and economic impact. I can share that Spain will be one of the strongest performers in Times Higher Education's forthcoming Impact Rankings, which assess universities' contribution to each of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, through their teaching, research, outreach and the stewardship of their resources. Spain has over 50 universities in the ranking, published on 12 June, and has a very strong performance overall - with particular, world-leading strengths in #SDG3 (good health and well being), #SDG8 (decent work and economic growth) and #SDG16 (peace, justice and strong institutions). This will translate into some very high world rankings positions in key SDGs in next month's Impact Rankings. I am delighted that Agencia Nacional SEPIE Erasmus Estudiar en España will be joining us for the rankings launch, and much more, at the Global Sustainable Development Congress in Bangkok next month. Be sure to visit the Spanish exhibition stand at the congress to learn more and to find out how to collaborate with Spanish universities. Join us at the #GSDCongress, held in partnership with Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation of Thailand: https://lnkd.in/etGrD2C6 View the current rankings here: https://lnkd.in/eYFgvUJE Thank you to THE's Lachyn Italmazova and to SEPIE's Patricia Onieva for exceptionally fruitful conversations and collaborations. #SDGs #sustainabledevelopment #THEGlobalimapct #SDGs2030 #climateaction #socialmobility #economicgrowth

📢 Upcoming Webinar from the IAU & APAIE | Asia-Pacific Association for International Education: Internationalization of Higher Education in Asia & Pacific: Current Trends and Future Scenarios About the #Webinar: Asia & the Pacific is the region of the world with the biggest higher education sector; more than one third of existing HEIs in the world are located in Asia & the Pacific. However, in terms of #internationalization, the voice of Asia & the Pacific is not yet taking the predominance it should at global level, as demonstrated also by the low participation of HEIs from the region in the 6th IAU Global #Survey on internationalization. It is therefore of utmost interest to know how internationalization is understood and evolving in Asia & the Pacific. Asia & the Pacific is a huge and incredibly diverse region, encompassing very different cultures and #education systems. In order to reflect these different perspectives, this webinar will investigate internationalization in Asia & the Pacific, starting from some relevant trends for the region emerging from the results of the 6th IAU Global Survey on internationalization and discussing them with experts from major countries in the region. Speakers include: - Helen Kronberger, Acting Head of International Education, Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade), Australia - Xiaomeng Zhang, Executive Academic Director for Executive Education, Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business, China - Yuto Kitamura, Associate Professor, Graduate School of Education, The University of Tokyo, Japan - Nopraenue Sajjarax Dhirathiti, Vice President for International Relations and Corporate Communication, Mahidol University, Thailand 📅 Thursday 27 June, 7:00 - 8:30 UTC 🌐 https://lnkd.in/e_wwN4Ae #IAUWebinar #FutureofHigherEducation #WebinarSeries #HigherEducation #HigherEd #InternationalEducation #Asia #Pacific #University #Universities

🌟 Securing EU competitiveness and resilience: Insights from Nordic Higher Education Institutions 🌍 In collaboration with fellow Nordic Higher Education Institutions during our event yesterday, we delved into the pivotal role these institutions play in bolstering the EU's #competitiveness and #resilience. During the panels, we got to hear topical insights also from Helsinki EU Office's member organisations University of the Arts Helsinki and Laurea University of Applied Sciences. Some key takeaways from the discussions: 🔍 EU strategic autonomy and security are cross-cutting issues calling for #multidisciplinary solutions - and Nordic Higher Education Institutions have a crucial role to play in this. Recognising the significance of multidisciplinary #research, #innovation, and #education in tackling global challenges and fortifying the EU's global standing is paramount. 🌐 We must look at the EU's resilience and security holistically and acknowledge the pivotal role that #SocialSciences, #Arts, and #Humanities (#SSAH) fields can play in fostering the EU's strategic autonomy, when given the opportunity to do so. For example, European investment in these sectors can mean investment in #equality and #democracy, utlimately bolstering EU security and competitiveness on the global stage. 📈 Amidst population decline and aging, prioritising investment in #skills development and #talent across critical sectors is imperative for the EU's future competitiveness. The EU must ensure it has the skilled workforce it needs to ensure its #defence and #security amidst the growing geopolitical pressure. Thank you to co-organisers Turun yliopisto - University of Turku Turku University of Applied Sciences Åbo Akademi University University of Oulu LUT University Caroline Sundberg 👏 #HigherEducation #Research #Innovation #EUCompetitiveness #NordicCollaboration #RIWeek
