During the Energy Communities Matchmaking Session held in Budapest on December 4, 2024, various initiatives promoting renewable energy and addressing energy poverty in the Marche Region were presented. Among these, the #GETA project, whose Università Politecnica delle Marche (Prof. Gabriele Comodi and Eng. Mosè Rossi) is a partner and placed in the #Marche #Region as well, stood out for its mission and innovative approach. GETA Project Highlights: Mission: To alleviate energy poverty impacting millions across Europe by empowering vulnerable communities through education, advocacy, and collaborative engagement. Approach: The project follows a people-first model grounded in equity and sustainability, ensuring fair access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy services for all. Key Initiatives: Educational Programs: Targeting younger generations to foster knowledge, skills, and habits that promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. Community Partnerships: Encouraging inclusive dialogue and co-creating solutions tailored to the specific challenges faced by communities experiencing energy poverty. How can we better support European regions in tackling today’s and tomorrow’s challenges? 📣 New interview! Sofia-Natalia Boemi shares her expertise on the energy transition with the #JUSTEM project. As the Head of the Energy and Climate Action Department in Western Macedonia, Sofia-Natalia Boemi has extensive experience working in just transition regions. Her field experience provides valuable insights into implementing fair transition strategies on the ground. 💡 #JUSTEM picked her brain on the importance of education in empowering communities as they transition away from fossil fuels and as a strategy to tackle energy poverty 📚 .    "Education must serve as a tool for social mobility, enabling individuals to break out of cycles of poverty." 🔎 Sofia-Natalia was also one of the people involved in setting up Greece’s first one-stop-shop for energy poverty. One-stop shops serve as community-centered hubs, they can help get everyone on board with the just transition and ensure no one is left behind. Yesterday's session on "Innovative Financing Options and Private Capital for Energy Transition in Cities" spotlighted how cities can embrace new funding models as traditional subsidies phase out. To achieve their net-zero goals, cities are exploring financing tools like citizen finance, green bonds, and energy performance contracts (EPCs). This shift allows cities to utilise diverse tools to power sustainability without reinventing the wheel. 🌍 Building Synergy with EU Initiatives Georg Houben, Policy Officer at the European Commission’s Directorate General for Energy, highlighted how EU programs like NetZeroCitiesEU, the Smart Cities Mission, and the Covenant of Mayors - Europe are bridging the gap to help cities access and leverage funding more efficiently. 🔑 Support and Capacity Building Speakers shared practical examples from Warsaw’s funding alignment strategies to private investment pathways, as presented by BwB. Last week, we had the honor of hosting a Canadian delegation of CEOs from Nova Scotia, Newfoundland, and Prince Edward Island. A big thank you to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark and State of Green Denmark for making the visit happen! It’s always exciting to share our approach and see how our ideas resonate internationally, and the delegation’s curiosity and enthusiasm were truly inspiring. On our tour of our park, we had some great conversations about: 🔋 How to optimise energy sharing in communities 🔥 Turning waste energy into new opportunities 🌱 Giving residual resources a second life instead of letting them go to waste   One of the key takeaways was how local communities hosting renewable energy can directly benefit from green industrial clusters. By connecting industries, sharing energy, and utilising resources more efficiently, these communities can create jobs, retain economic value locally, and reduce environmental impact. It’s a win-win for the environment and for the people who live and work in these regions.   Thank you to everyone who joined us for an insightful day! We’re looking forward to keeping the conversation going and hopefully seeing some of these ideas take shape in Canada too.
