I am super excited to share that our article, "Examining and Overcoming Barriers to Leadership for Black Women in HBCU Spaces," co-authored with my esteemed colleagues, has been published in the Advancing Women in Leadership Journal! Why Elevating the Black Woman Experience Matters in HBCUs: Black women in HBCUs are at the intersection of academic excellence, cultural identity, and resilience. Their experiences often go unrecognized, yet they contribute profoundly to shaping the HBCU community, leadership, and beyond. Elevating their stories and insights helps foster inclusive environments where every voice is valued and supported. Our research takes a close look at the unique barriers Black women encounter when pursuing leadership roles in Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs). From navigating microaggressions and limited mentorship access to balancing work-life demands, our study also highlights the empowering strategies Black women use, including mentorship and support networks, to overcome these challenges. As a Black woman in leadership, I carry the weight of my ancestors’ dreams and the resilience of those who came before me. 🌍💪 The journey to the top isn’t easy, but it’s one filled with strength, purpose, and power. According to recent studies, only about 3% of Black women hold senior leadership roles in corporate America, and Black women make up just 5% of nonprofit leadership positions. Yet, we continue to break barriers, defy expectations, and lead with authenticity, compassion, and unapologetic excellence. Black women leaders are shifting the narrative, breaking glass ceilings, and leaving an undeniable impact on the world. From nonprofit organizations to corporate boardrooms, our leadership drives change that’s felt far beyond our communities. As Audre Lorde once said, "I am not free while any woman is unfree, even when her shackles are very different from my own." My leadership is about lifting as I climb and ensuring the success of others along the way. 🌟 Here’s to more Black women leading with power, grace, and purpose. Great feature on philanthropy leader Trish Adobea Tchume by Mandy Van Deven! It's so refreshing to read Trish's reflections on the power dynamics and responsibility of philanthropy: "For as long as it exists, philanthropy has a responsibility to serve as risk capital and give people space to think beyond what is currently happening — but its role has to be specific: You’re mostly the money. The work I do is to negotiate that and to create structures that help us to mostly stay in that lane. It’s not that we have no opinion about what we think is possible, but the frameworks we are developing around our exploring leadership work are really clear about our funding role. As transparently as possible, I negotiate the tension between what we care about as funders and what the partners we resource care about, and try to design something that redistributes power so that the people who have the most to gain from this experimentation have the most power in figuring out how the experiment goes."
