Celebrating World Environment Day! The theme for this year is “our land, our future”. A call to conserving our resources through sustainable practices. As a fish farmer, I understand the role of aquaculture in promoting environmental sustainability if done right. 📍Aquaculture allows maximal use of limited resources which is land. A small piece of land that might not be suitable for arable crops can accommodate a tank or a concrete pond to raise fish for consumption and commercial purposes. 📍There is no waste with aquaculture. Fish effluents can serve as organic manure to plants. This is used in most aquaponics systems. 📍Fish wastes from processing can be used in the formulation of feed for livestock. In an integrated aquaculture system wastes from other animals can be fed to fish (e.g poultry-cum-fish) So when you think of sustainable land usage, aquaculture. When you think of fish farming, think of Sokvikia. Let's take responsibility for a greener and healthier tomorrow. #UnWED #WorldEnvironmentDay #greenbusiness #agribusiness #AquacultureScience #fishfarmervicky #fishfarming #fish #aquaculture #entrepreneur #business #foodsecurity #Sokvikiafarms #Youthandwomenempowerment #sdgs

Did you know that ~88% of assessed fish stocks are either overfished or at their maximum sustainable limits? This week, we analysed 114 European aquaculture players and collected valuable insights on the increasing dominance of a select group of fisheries, the main drivers behind margin expansion in the challenging fish processing and distribution market as well as the emerging opportunities in controlled-environment fish farming. PE interest has been low, with ~15% of identified assets being sponsor-backed. Key reasons to invest include the positive population growth projections and rising seafood consumption, adoption of land-based fish farms with enhanced productivity and growing demand for low-impact and traceable seafood products. On the other hand, the lack of sustainable catch limits, rising aquaculture production costs and competition from countries with more favourable regulations serve as detractors for investors. Alantra Wealth Management, AMDG PRIVATE EQUITY, AMERRA Capital Management, LLC, CapMan, Corporacion Financiera Alba SA, Craft Capital, GED Capital, IDIA Capital Investissement, LRF Ventures, MCH Private Equity, Mubadala, Novax, Oquendo Capital, PAI Partners, Portobello Capital, Rigeto Unternehmerkapital, SOCADIF Capital Investissement, Summa Equity, Unigrains Valedo Partners, VigentGroup and Xenon Private Equity, amongst others, are currently invested in the European aquaculture market. Post #1: 🌍 Unlocking Africa’s Aquaculture Potential: Why We Should Farm More Fish 🐟 Africa is poised to become a global leader in aquaculture, and here’s why we should dive in: 1. Growing Demand: With the world population expected to reach 9.7 billion by 2050, global fish consumption is projected to rise by 40%. Africa can meet this demand by scaling up its fish farming industry. 2. Food Security: Fish is a crucial source of protein. In Africa, where over 250 million people suffer from malnutrition, expanding aquaculture can provide a sustainable and nutritious food source, helping to combat food insecurity. 3. Economic Impact: Aquaculture has the potential to generate over $50 billion annually for Africa’s economies. By investing in fish farming, we can create millions of jobs (mainly for the youth) and foster economic development in rural areas. 4. Environmental Benefits: Responsible aquaculture can be a sustainable source of aquatic foods, with a lower carbon footprint than traditional animal husbandry and reduced pressure on wild fish stocks. By supporting and investing in aquaculture, we’re not only enhancing food security and boosting economies but also paving the way for a more sustainable future. Let’s harness Africa’s potential and make a splash in the global fish farming industry! #Aquaculture #SustainableFarming #FoodSecurity #EconomicGrowth #Africa #Innovation #fish #fishfarming

Most of the mussels you’ll buy or order at a restaurant in the U.S. are farmed – including those from our friends Patagonia Provisions. Aquaculture – fish farming – accounts for 94% of all commercial global mussel production. That’s good news! Aside from being healthy and delicious, farmed mussels are rated green for environmental sustainability. The environmental impacts of farming mussels are minimal – and in some cases they can even benefit the surrounding ecosystems. Farmers don’t feed mussels. Instead, these filter feeders gather food like organic matter and phytoplankton naturally from the ocean water around them. Filter feeding can improve water quality. British Columbia’s salmon farming industry sees a new era on the horizon as Canada adopts a “whole-of-government” approach to the sector’s transition away from open net pen farming. In a bold move, the Fisheries and Oceans Canada / Pêches et Océans Canada (DFO) will no longer lead the process in BC. Instead, a multi-agency task force—coordinated by the newly formed secretariat called ISED, or Industry, Science and Economic Development Canada, will steer the effort. This shift is significant for Jennifer Woodland, chair of the BC Salmon Farmers Association and managing director of Grieg Seafood BC Ltd., as the DFO has historically acted as both a regulator and a promoter of the industry, a dual role that some in the industry see as limiting the sector's potential. Woodland shared her optimism: "We've never had a true champion for aquaculture in Canada. This broader approach, with its focus on the bigger picture, is crucial," she told former Mowi executive Ian Roberts, in the Salmon Farming Inside & Out podcast. Undercurrent News has the story: https://lnkd.in/gK2VWNbs Photo: Grieg Seafood BC #salmonfarming #BritishColumbia #aquaculture #seafood #Canada
