According to the Gibraltar Health Authority, approximately one in four of us will experience a mental health need at some point in our lives. Having access to the right treatment and support is a key aspect to recovering. As part of AIGL’s local community sponsorship programme in 2024, the team chose to sponsor GibSams’ new face-to-face training offering. GibSams does an extraordinary amount for the community in Gibraltar by offering a mental health network for anyone in mental distress and we are proud to be able to support such a worthy cause (pictured: GibSams’ CEO Brenda Cuby, AIGL’s COO Lisa Casemore and CFO Will Moulder). Prioritising Mental Health as Lawyers 💬💼 With tomorrow being World Mental Health Day, I wanted to share some resources for those of us in the legal profession who may be feeling low, lacking in confidence, or struggling to meet expectations. It’s important to know that you’re not alone—many lawyers feel this way, and it’s not a reflection of your abilities or potential. 🧠 Imposter syndrome is common, even among successful lawyers. It can make us place unrealistic demands on ourselves and blow feelings of self-doubt out of proportion. Take time to reflect on your achievements and be kind to yourself. 💬 If you’re experiencing symptoms like anxiety, stress, or unhappiness, it might be worth reaching out to someone. Your mental health is just as important as your career success. Here are a few things that might help: ⭐️LawCare - the mental health charity for the legal sector Fit for Law series, which offers insights into healthier ways of working in law. ☕️ Make time for self-care—whether it’s hobbies, connecting with friends, or engaging with support networks like junior lawyer groups. 🤲Consider seeking peer support. Talking to someone who’s experienced similar challenges can make a world of difference. 🗣️ LawCare - the mental health charity for the legal sector offers free and confidential emotional support for legal professionals. You can reach them at 0800 279 6888 or through their online chat or email. Here is also some useful articles I have found: https://lnkd.in/eY8bQAj5 https://lnkd.in/eePZ8Vf4 This #WorldMentalHealthDay, let’s make mental health a priority for ourselves and for each other. 💚 #MentalHealthMatters #LawyerWellbeing #SelfCareInLaw #ImposterSyndrome

This #HoardingAwarenessWeek we want to raise awareness of a condition that can impact anyone. A hoarding disorder is where someone acquires an excessive number of items and stores them in a chaotic manner, usually resulting in unmanageable amounts of clutter. The items can be of little or no monetary value. Hoarding disorders are challenging to treat because many people who hoard frequently do not see it as a problem, or have little awareness of how it's affecting their life or the lives of others. It's really important to encourage a person who is hoarding to seek help, as their difficulties discarding objects can not only cause loneliness and mental health problems but also pose a health and safety risk. Encourage them to contact their GP or seek help from local mental health support services like Don't Lose Hope Charity in Bourne. This weekend I struggled to switch off after more local devistaing news. Only to wake up Monday with another close call in exactly the same place. Now Tuesday news of another life gone too soon! I’m part of the local suicide prevention task group from a lived perspective. Unfortunately the red tape slows things down way too much, to even feel like I’m actually helping. I’m currently feeling like the only way things will change is if I actually do something about it myself. I’m looking at ways to fund a 24 hour crisis café for St.Helens as a CIC. I’m going to need help, it’s not something I can do on my own but it’s needed. I’ve definitely not seen any government funding for mental health in a while, so the council can’t have any extra funds. It’s the only way I can see anything happing in a time scale that could help. Thankfully today I got to do a clay bird workshop for my Fly Free project. This will be a mosaic on Derbyshire hill family centre in Parr, the aim is community cohesion. Funded by St.Helens councils resettlement team. Now I’ve been saying art is the answer for years and today proved this! Some of the conversations lead to some possible answers into the recent increase in suicides in men locally. Now to see what I can do to help! This can’t go on, we need some serious changes and fast not in a couple of years. #suicideprevention #StHelens #PublicHealth #community #mentalhealth #trauma #wellbeing #art #conversations #pantry #schoolholidays #support #livedexperience

Really important for people to see the vital life saving work of services in action.
ITV News sees Depaul-led consortium save lives in Northern Ireland As Depaul Ireland and its partners Arc Solace and First Housing mark 10 years of harm reduction services in the North West they were joined by ITV to see first hand the partnership in action when they were called upon to administer Naloxone to save a life. Marking the 135th time this year they have administered this life saving drug. To mark 10 years of the partnership, Depaul, launched a report which revealed a sharp rise in homelessness in the 10 years and an increasingly complex landscape of mental illness. With an ever increasing need for services now more than ever these services are hugely important to the community.

Our Men’s Health Hub (part of our Health Champions project) is a voluntary wellbeing session and activity group for residents which meets every fortnight. It not only provides a trusted and confidential space to open-up, talk, and obtain guidance and support, but also enables trained staff and volunteers, many of whom have lived through similar experiences, circumstances and emotions, to offer first-hand advice, understanding, hope (and proof) that things can get better. This, for some volunteers (or champions) prior to themselves being offered Tyne Housing accommodation, includes a history of homelessness or insecure housing which according to national charity, Crisis sees 45% of those experiencing homelessness also being diagnosed with mental health issues. This can be both a cause and/or consequence of, and rises to 8 out of 10 people for those sleeping rough and experiencing insecure housing. Yesterday marked the start of Stress Awareness Month. We as legal recruiters recognise the demanding nature of being a lawyer: billable targets, client expectations, and unexpected late nights. Shockingly, 69% of lawyers have experienced depression, anxiety, bullying, or burnout (source: LawCare). These stats demand action within the legal industry. Below are a few resources to consider this month and beyond: - LawCare - Legal mental health & wellbeing charity (https://lnkd.in/gN38u4S) - Support for Lawyers (https://lnkd.in/gfBDpZ7t) - The Law Society Tips for Mental Health (Stress and mental health | The Law Society) #Legalcareer #wellbeing #mentalhealth #Stressawarenessmonth
