Education is the cornerstone of effective climate change solutions! That's why initiatives like the #ArabikaProject are crucial. The project empowers communities through waste management skills, specifically focusing on recycling coffee pulp. Did you know, coffee pulp makes up a whopping 40% of the fruit's weight? Through composting, Arabika turns this waste into valuable manure, promoting a more sustainable future. Africa, with its abundant natural resources, is at a critical juncture in balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. The continent's wealth of minerals, fossil fuels, and agricultural land is vital for development, but their extraction and use have significant environmental costs. Notably, these activities contribute substantially to greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss, emphasizing the urgent need for sustainable resource management. A promising approach is the adoption of circular economy principles, which focus on enhancing resource efficiency, reducing waste, and promoting the reuse and recycling of materials. For example, initiatives like Unilever's Clean Future program, which uses biodegradable biosurfactants in cleaning products, demonstrate how businesses can reduce their environmental impact while creating new revenue streams. By integrating such practices, African businesses and policymakers can drive economic growth, enhance resilience, and contribute to global sustainability goals. Embracing these strategies is essential for ensuring a prosperous and sustainable future for Africa. #Ghana #Africa #Resources #Sustainability

The hands of 40 years of sorting through waste. Paul Ngige now 45 is a waste picker in Makadara, Nairobi. Collecting more than 1000kg per month, Paul and the 20 million other waste pickers are able to collect 60% of the world's recyclables. Far more efficiently than expensive garbage trucks, sorting machines and other hardware. Yet they are underpaid and undervalued. Listen to my interview with podcast apaPETation and discover ways in which this can be changed. https://lnkd.in/eeks4JXD #wastepickers #plasticpollution KOLEKT BVRio EU Africa RISE (Reform for Investment and Sustainable Economies) BIC Archipelago VC KEPRO Kenya United Nations Environment Programme Finance Initiative (UNEP FI) #plastictreaty #unplastictreaty

On Africa Industrialisation Day, we celebrate innovation and sustainability! 🌍💡 With West and East Africa supplying the world’s shea, developing industry is vital in driving economic growth and sustainable development. Industrialisation plays a critical role in creating jobs, reducing poverty and advancing the continent’s structural transformation, ensuring a brighter future for communities and industries alike. This year’s theme, ‘Leveraging AI and Green Industrialisation to Accelerate Africa's Structural Transformation’, highlights the importance of sustainable industrialisation in driving economic growth and community empowerment. The shea industry plays a vital role in this transformation and the Global Shea Alliance (GSA) connects small, medium and large scale industrialisation efforts within the shea sector to build a more inclusive economy. Through strategic investments of more than $84 million in sustainability projects across West Africa, the GSA has optimised post harvest processing, significantly reducing energy consumption and waste. It has also delivered business training for women collectors and championed responsible sourcing practices to protect and preserve shea parklands, ensuring long term environmental and economic benefits. These efforts directly reduce the environmental footprint of the industry whilst empowering rural women and enhancing the sustainability of local economies. Over the past decade, value addition in the shea sector has grown by 60%, complemented by the rise of green technologies and innovations. Examples include solar panel dryers for shea kernels, solar powered processing equipment and more energy efficient machinery introduced to women collectors. Across the value chain, from downstream kernel drying to midstream butter production, innovations are optimising processes, reducing waste and minimising the use of water and chemicals. The shea sector is driving green industrialisation through the increasing launch of eco conscious processing centers across major producing countries. Key advancements include repurposing shea waste for energy, adopting water efficient systems, implementing waste to compost initiatives and using water scrubbers to reduce dust and pollutants from chimneys, lowering the chemical footprint. The shift toward eco friendly packaging with biodegradable or recyclable materials further underscores the sector's commitment to sustainability. By advancing such initiatives, the shea industry exemplifies how green industrialisation can drive economic growth, empower communities and promote environmental sustainability. Together, we are building a brighter, more inclusive future! 🌍✨ #AfricaIndustrialisationDay #SustainableDevelopment #EmpoweringWomen #GreenIndustrialisation
