On my way to IPMU (https://lnkd.in/esY_aWKd) in gorgeous Lisboa, a conference with a friendly atmosphere to exchange about uncertainty. In order of appearance, we will talk about: * Using robust kernels to process signal and more particularly to remove noisy pixels from images, using imprecise probabilistic models. A work done with Frederic Comby and Olivier Strauss from the LIRMM * Decombining belief functions efficiently, an essential tool if we want to correct potential inconsistencies between pieces information. This work was mainly done by Daira Pinto Prieto together with Ronald de Haan, and is a follow-up of Daira visit funded by the SAFE AI chair. * Propagating uncertainties in geospatial problems, with a specific focus on predicting pollutants in soils. This work is part of Priscillia Labourg thesis, and was done in collaboration with romain guillaume, Benjamin Quost, Jérémy Rohmer and Stephane Belbeze. Priscillia thesis is funded by the project HOUSES which is led by the BRGM institute.

Honoured to have contributed to the opening session of the Fifth Winner conference in The Hague to share experiences on our cooperation and impacts in our collaborative project with IT Bandung in our project on regional energy transitions in Indonesia generously funded under the #MerianProgram by NWO (Dutch Research Council) and the Indonesian government in a project jointly led by prof Kornelis Blok, TU Delft | Technology, Policy and Management en prof Harkunti Rahayu, Institut Teknologi Bandung. I argued that our scientific collaboration did not only lead to joint cutting edge scientific results for the Net Zero Emission 2060 ambition of Indonesia, but equally important also to joint and mutual capacity building for the energy transition among researchers, students, policymakers, and professionals by our combination of research, stakeholder engagement, training and education. My conclusions were as follows: • Cooperation needs face-to-face and exchange trips • Stakeholder engagement important for impact and understanding complexity • Early career and students/education are key building blocks for the future • Collaboration good basis for follow-up & spin-off • Impact oriented research funding like the Merian program essential, as without the Merian program none of our activities and results would have been achieved. Leiden secured the 6th spot in ICCA's national conference destination ranking for 2023. ICCA (International Congress and Convention Association) annually ranks cities based on conference factors such as rotation in countries, frequency, and participant numbers. The first position is held by Amsterdam, followed by Rotterdam, The Hague, Utrecht, and Maastricht. Leiden hosted 16 ICCA-approved international conferences in 2023, ranking 81st in Europe and 143rd globally. With strong collaboration among our city partners, we successfully host international scientific conferences in Leiden, despite the absence of large-scale convention centers. Connecting multiple venues in Leiden transforms the historic city center into the conference floor. Miranda Geerlings, manager of Leiden Convention Bureau, is pleased with the result. "Our 6th position in the annual ranking is a remarkable achievement for the 22nd most populated city in the Netherlands. It's a reward for the efforts of Leiden Convention Bureau, our conference ambassadors, and all our conference partners. The title of European City of Science 2022 has given the city of Leiden a place in the spotlight of science on a European scale. I believe that this title has been and will continue to be a great magnet for international conferences and associations to choose Leiden as their destination. In the years to come, the ambition for Leiden is to maintain the legacy that the title European City of Science has given Leiden and to really make an impact for Leiden as a city where science flourishes." 📷©Monique-Shaw #Leiden #cityofscience #ICCA #conference #meeting Read the official press release here: https://lnkd.in/e95a3xjy

I was pleased to contribute to the ongoing EIT HEI Initiative event today in Brussels to once again represent EURASHE, E.I.N.S. E³UDRES² European University Entrepreneurship and Innovation Network for Smart and Sustainable Regions and Fachhochschule St. Pölten. My main issues: - It is all about passionate and open-minded colleagues. With support from the EIT HEI Initiative we have enabled and empowered these „Ent-re-e-novators“ (Entrepreneurs, researchers, educators, innovators) who drive necessary change and transformation of higher education. - We have to re-shape higher education institutions and connect them closer to society and industries in order to co-create impact and help to solve societal, ecological and economic challenges. We have to re-think our roles to overcome an increasing lack of trust in science that is not only widespread amongst people that we first leave behind and then blaim to vote far right- or left-wing. Also CEOs of successful companies, like for instance Leonhard Birnbaum in an interview in DIE ZEIT a few month ago, point out the scientists are irrelevant for him, as they are only able to answer his questions in 20 or 30 years time, but he has to take decisions and act right now… - We have to manage complexity, act opportunity driven and - at least from time to time - leave our cosy scientific bubbles and academic ivory towers. We have to join all our forces and co-create mutual benefits together with various stakeholders. We have to build on the diversity of European regions as most relevant source for both innovation and resilience. Yes, we are „Stronger Together“, as we recently pointed out during our EURASHE Annual Conference.
📢EURASHE President Hannes Raffaseder today joined a #PolicyPanel at the closing event of the EIT HEI Initiative pilot phase, alongside Antoaneta Angelova-Krasteva - European Commission, Valtencir M. Mendes - UNESCO and Heinrich Arnold, EIT - European Institute of Innovation and Technology Board member. Secretary General John Edwards is also involved in the event leading a workshop on #SmartSpecialisation. The HEI Initiative, funded by #HorizonEurope recognises HEIs as the pivotal actors in #regional and #European innovation ecosystems. EURASHE, whose members are deeply embedded in their regional innovation ecosystems, organised a webinar with the #EIT on the last call and plans another for the next call this autumn. Commenting on research funding in Ireland Iliana Ivanova, European Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education and Youth said “Many Irish universities rank among the 500 best universities worldwide. This makes Ireland one of our strongest innovators in the EU, our innovation score board ranks you 16% higher than the EU average. As we look towards the future we should learn from the success, especially when we consider the challenges that still exist. If we look for instance at Ireland’s research intensity, this is the percentage of investment on research and innovation from GDP, we see it is 1% and as it is, it remains much, much lower than the EU 3% target for 2030.” 🔗 Click below to watch Iliana Ivanova’s full speech from our Future of Ireland ‘New Horizons for Research & Innovation’ event yesterday. 👉 https://lnkd.in/ejcp63ZY Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science DCU Research UCD Research UL Research Trinity College Dublin University of Galway Technological University Dublin Maynooth University UCC Research Science Foundation Ireland
