World Diabetes Day 2024: celebrating progress and calling for better care World Diabetes Day is here! Let's recognize the progress made in diabetes care and advocate for a future where everyone has access to the support they need. Read Elisabeth Dupont’s, regional manager at International Diabetes Federation Europe inspiring words and join #JACARDI and its allies in calling for a more equitable and holistic approach to diabetes management. 👇 "World Diabetes Day is more than just a date on the calendar. It's a moment to recognize the incredible strides made since insulin’s discovery a century ago and to acknowledge the challenges that still lie ahead. On November 14th, we are reminded of the importance of a person-centred, integrated approach to improve how we prevent, diagnose, and manage diabetes across Europe. This day also amplifies a shared call from the diabetes community. Together, we are asking for a more equitable Europe, where everyone affected by diabetes has access to the care, innovation, support and education they need. Together, we are also advocating for a more holistic approach that addresses the interconnected nature of diabetes and other major NCDs. By prioritizing a comprehensive approach, we can support healthier lives, prevent complications, and strengthen care for those affected. This is a day to celebrate the engagement of people living with diabetes, to listen to their voices, and to renew our commitment to making diabetes care a priority. By standing together, we can inspire the change needed to make a real difference in millions of lives across Europe." #EU4Health #HealthUnion #PublicHealth #JACARDI

🌍 A heartfelt thank you to MEP Andras Kulja MD for hosting our #WorldDiabetesDay event, "Re-thinking #Health in the #EU for a Sustainable Future" and to VP Christel Schaldemose for her invaluable support. Their dedication to the diabetes community is truly inspiring, driving real change toward a healthier, more sustainable future for all. 🙏 We are also deeply grateful to President Roberta Metsola for her inspiring keynote address and unwavering commitment to improving the lives of people with #diabetes (PwD). Her words resonate deeply and serve as a powerful call to action: "We have the resources to turn the tide on diabetes. We now also need political will." 💡 The event, moderated by IDFE Director, Policy & Strategy, Sabine Dupont, gethered key stakeholders to discuss how the EU can support health system transformation and improve the lives of people living with diabetes and other #NCDs. 💙 #T1D & #T2D advocates, Anamarija Runtić & Erik Werson shared their personal experiences of living with diabetes and highlighted the need for more integrated and personalised care, and better access to self-management #technologies & #education. 🔵 In the 1st panel, Dr. Valerie Luyckx, MBBCh, MSc, PhD, EKHA - European Kidney Health Alliance President-Elect, Dr. Luk Buyse, Diabetes Liga President, & Dr. Sufyan Hussain, IDFE Board Member, explored future perspectives in diabetes prevention & care. They highlighted the need to overcome fragmentation within health systems & improve access to person-centred care. They also emphasised the role of regular screening to prevent or slow down the progression of complications, and reduce healthcare costs. 🔵 The 2nd panel featured Mr. CHRIS J. DELICATA, IDFE Advisor & President of the Maltese Diabetes Association, VP Schaldemose and Dr. Hussain who discussed the EU’s role in driving health system transformation. They highlighted the importance of supporting Member States in meeting global health goals & reducing inequalities in access to care across countries. Advancing research and innovation, and leveraging digital tools were identified as key steps to improve health systems' efficiency. 🔵 Mr. Delicata introduced IDFE, highlighting its priorities and collaborative efforts with the diabetes community & the MEPs Mobilising for Diabetes Interest Group (MMD) to drive impactful policy changes & improve outcomes for PwD. 🏆 A key highlight was the awarding of the 1st IDF Europe Advocate Prize by Ludovica Florenzano (Lilly Diabetes), to T1D Advocate Lea Leleta, celebrating her outstanding and innovative advocacy work for the diabetes community. We wish to thank Eli Lilly and Company for supporting this initiative. 🙏🏻 We would like to thank everyone who joined us and all who helped make this event a success. Together, we are committed to driving our collaboration forward toward a strong European Health Union, ensuring that all people living with diabetes & other NCDs can achieve the best possible quality of life.

🌍 Today, on #WorldDiabetesDay, I was honoured to host at the European Parliament the event on “Re-thinking health in the EU for a sustainable future”, discussing on how to enable change to improve the lives of people with #diabetes and other #NCDs. I was honored to have President Roberta Metsola addressing a keynote speech, and Vice President Christel Schaldemose addressing special remarks. Their dedication to this cause is invaluable. Over 32 million people in Europe live with diabetes, and the ripple effects extend far beyond health—impacting families, communities, and economies. Together with patient advocates Annamarjia Runtic and Erik Werson, and many dedicated colleagues and experts, we discussed the urgent need for action in four key areas: 👉 #Prevention & #EarlyDetection: Diagnosing diabetes early can prevent severe complications. However, access to routine screenings varies widely across Europe, especially in rural areas. We need an EU-wide strategy to ensure equitable screening for all citizens. 👉 #Integrated #Care: Effective diabetes management requires coordinated care across multiple healthcare providers. Countries like the Netherlands have shown us the impact of integrated models, but we must replicate these successes across all Member States. 👉 #Access to #Innovation: Continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, and telemedicine are revolutionizing diabetes care. But these tools must be accessible to everyone, regardless of geography or income level. 👉 #EU Policy Support: A dedicated, EU-wide action plan on diabetes is essential to drive meaningful change. I am committed to working closely with the European Commission and diabetes community to make this a reality. 💙 Today’s discussions were inspiring, but they must be more than words. They’re a call to action for all of us to create a healthier future where no European is left behind in diabetes care. A special thank you to International Diabetes Federation Europe, and especially Elisabeth Dupont for their support, as well as to our moderator Sabine Dupont! Let’s continue to push forward with concrete steps that will make a lasting difference. #WorldDiabetesDay #DiabetesAwareness #HealthEquity #EUAction #PreventDiabetes #HealthcareInnovation
