The offshore industry’s adoption of 𝐄𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐠𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐒𝐲𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐦𝐬 (ESS) has grown steadily.
The first significant uptake came in 2018, with 12 retrofits in the sector, but since 2023, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐩𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐭𝐬 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐬𝐥𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐝 𝐝𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐚𝐧 𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐢𝐧 𝐨𝐟𝐟𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐲. Another turnaround is anticipated, however, as newbuilds are increasingly incorporating this technology.
ESS is a medium-term strategy to 𝐜𝐮𝐭 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐛𝐲 𝟏𝟎-𝟏𝟓%, 𝐛𝐨𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐭 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐝𝐲𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐜 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠. It is often paired with shore power systems and remains the most widely 𝐚𝐝𝐨𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐝 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧-𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲, with over 300 vessels equipped globally.
To date, Platform Supply Vessels (PSVs) are the most equipped, with around 30% of all installations in this fleet.
