💼 ✨ A week ago marked an important milestone for the Policy Lab as we participated in the international seminar: Links Between #GreenTransition Policy Interventions, #Environmental Sustainability and #Social Wellbeing in Europe. The seminar was held in Brussels as part of our GREENPATHS Project, which is the European #KnowledgeHub on Just Transition Pathways. 🌈 The seminar was insightful and set the stage for a promising year ahead in knowledge production towards a fair and sustainable Europe. It served as a catalyst for collaboration and action, fostering strategic dialogues to map policy-environment-society connections and shape institutional frameworks. Key highlights included presentations on the project's objectives and significance in the European context, as well as a showcase of GREENPATHS's first deliverables. 🚀 The seminar was organized by Transnational Institute (TNI), Friends of the Earth Europe (FoEE), Oxfam Intermón, and Universidad de Cantabria. The Horizon research project partners that is implemented by 13 partners from across the EU. Our new Horizon Europe project DEMETRA has finally started! Over the next 3,5 years, we will increase our understanding of how to collectively organize food system transformations at the city level in democratic, participatory and inclusive ways. Together with a great team of researchers and civil society organizations, we will analyze and compare new deliberative participatory processes (DPPs such as citizens' assemblies, e-governance, participatory budgeting) in seven cities across Europe to gain insights on their inclusiveness and empowerment of citizens as well as on their impact on transforming local food systems. Our aim is it to identify best practices and DPPs that contribute to citizens' democratic engagement and their co-construction of sustainable food systems. Citizen participation is essential for addressing both climate change and a reducing trust in our democratic institutions. The far-reaching sustainability transformations have to become supported by and co-created by all citizens in our societies. Particularly in the light of the recent attacks against our democracies, it becomes crucial to scrutinize democratic, participatory and inclusive ways of engaging all citizens in our sustainability transitions, including citizens from marginalized groups. No one has to be left behind. Our projects seeks to provide tools for a democratic governance of sustainability transformations. I am so excited to be part of a great team involving Maria Grasso (scientific coordinator) and Otto Carlo Hofer at Queen Mary University, Lorenzo Bosi (coordinator) and Irina Aguiari at Scuola Normale Superiore, Mare Ainsaar (PI) at Tartu Ulikool, Sabine Weiland (PI) at Institut Catholique de Lille, Katrin Uba (PI) at Uppsala Universitet, Marco Guigni (PI), Ophelia Nicole-Berva and Elena Reinhart at Université de Genève, Ian O'Flynn (PI) and Max Rozenburg at University of Newcastle upon Tyne, Tommaso Tonet at Campi Aperti per la Sovranità Alimentary, Cecilia Conti at Cinemovel Foundation, Florian Sander and Jörn Hamacher at Ernährungsrat Köln und Umgebung e.V., and Philipp Degens and myself (PI) at Universität Witten/Herdecke. Our gratitude goes to the Reinhard Mohn Institute for hosting our German team of researchers - thanks so much, Guido Möllering, for all your support until now and in the following years! 👏 With this important funding announcement, the UK government is demonstrating the value that it places on evidence-synthesis. Evidence-synthesis is integral to the work of Hesat2030. Through the work of the Juno Evidence Alliance, a Hesat2030 initiative, we are able to use artificial intelligence to screen millions of scientific articles and grey literature to understand what interventions are truly needed and where they can have the most impact. 🔥 This is central to Hesat2030's mission - leveraging evidence-based research, innovative technologies and coordinated action with the goal of ending hunger sustainably, nutritiously and equitably. We provides and policy-makers with the resources and tools necessary to make informed and scientifically based decisions.
Exciting news from the Summit of the Future! 🌍 UK Government has announced an initial investment of £11.5 million for AI-driven evidence synthesis. This is a major step towards accelerating evidence-based policymaking. Our work at the Juno Evidence Alliance aligns closely with this initiative, and we're committed to supporting policymakers with the data and insights they need to make informed decisions. https://lnkd.in/dpjn4h_t #evidencebasedpolicy #agriculture #foodsystems #climatechange #JunoEvidenceAlliance #UKRI

🖥️ Australia’s innovation sector relies on collaboration between #research, #industry and #government. However, until recently, connecting these groups was challenging. The ARDC’s Research Link Australia (RLA) platform bridges theis information gap to drive innovation and collaboration. RLA allows users to easily search for information about research activities and stakeholders, connecting researchers with industry and enabling businesses to find the right collaborators to enhance their R&D capabilities. "The RLA platform makes the connection between research, government, and industry more visible, and catalyses and cultivates the collaborations needed for innovation to thrive," said Rosie Hicks, CEO of the ARDC, at RLA's launch in Canberra on 19 September. Claire S., Assistant Secretary for Research Policy and Programs at the Australian Government Department of Education, highlighted that translating the benefits of Australia’s research sector into wider society was a key priority in the 2021 National Research Infrastructure (#NRI) Roadmap. “Australia produces excellent research. However, there’s a need to improve the delivery of commercial outcomes,” said Ms Sainsbury. “RLA is a fantastic example of how research infrastructure can help make this happen.” At the launch event, several exciting RLA partner projects were announced, aiming to refine the platform and expand its use. 🩺 RLA Data Community of Practice (CoP) Health and Wellbeing is unifying fragmented #health research data across institutions, healthcare and government, as the project lead Dr Amir Aryani explained at the launch. 🐟 Sailing the Marine Knowledge Landscape with RLA is making #marine and #agricultural research from the FRDC - Fisheries Research and Development Corporation more discoverable and accessible. 🔎 The Lens Global Patent Information for RLA is providing access to global #patent data to better connect research, industry and government. 🏛️ RLA: National Aggregator of #University Research Capability Data is addressing the need for unified tools to identify research expertise and partnerships across Australian universities and industries. 🔗 Read more about the launch and partner projects, and start using RLA today > https://lnkd.in/gRh_9TBu

Yesterday and today we have discussed the findings of our #JRC exploratory research activity on ‘Sustainable #innovation and #transition pathways in #rural areas’ in a workshop with experts and regional policy-makers. We have been working on a novel approach combining research on #sustainability transitions with systemic approaches to innovation capacities, specifically focusing on rural #regions. The approach should be feasible for implementation in areas with low institutional #capacity and appropriate to support evidence-informed policy-making processes. Soooo many insights and inspirational contributions! Food for thought on how to move beyond ‘standardised’ ways of looking into #territorial transitions. Is a different metric (or a different mindset) needed to fully grasp rural innovation? I took with me many lessons from an inspiring workshop organised by Simone Sasso and Michal Miedzinski of the #JRC about the role of #innovation for #transition #pathways in #rural areas. First, it is necessary to consider the variety of local preconditions, which provide specific opportunities and limitations for transition pathways in rural areas. Second, a broader perspective of transition pathways is required, considering also community- and nature-based pathways, which are essential for social and environmental sustainability but are largely ignored. Third, a more capacitous perspective of local agency is needed to make transition pathways happen, which often include institutional (norm, regulatory) changes, as well as place-leadership and coordination. Fourth, it is necessary to move from generic regional indicators to the concrete conditions, aspirations and interests as expressed by the variety of local communities in rural areas to resolve contestations and develop tangible and concrete roadmaps of change. This relates to a large body of work with colleagues over the recent years on #change #agency and #opportunity #spaces, varieties of #peripheries, #transformative change, and #regional #innovation #policy. Today in European Parliament...the majority of Politicians (329 to be exact) voted FOR anchoring Decency + Resiliency + Permaculture + Innovation + Entrepreneurship + Family + Wealth + and Nature. Today is an improvement. Today is a testament that European Values mean something. For the Luxembourg Members of European Parliament who advocate for anchoring Decency in Agriculture+ ...especially Tilly Metz... 🙏🏻MERCI!!!
